Coastal Carolina men’s golf turned in a first round team score of 286 on Friday

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Coastal Carolina juniors Zack Taylor and States Fort each shot under par on day one of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate to lead the Chanticleers to a first round team score of 286, 2-under par, on Friday at the Blackthorn Club at The Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.

The Chants are in a three-way tie for eighth-place overall with East Carolina and Virginia Tech. The three teams are 16 strokes behind the team leader and just five shots out of the top-five.

As a team, Coastal leads the tournament field with 62 pars overall.

"We played poorly today, nothing much to say other than that," head coach Jim Garren stated. "We have got to get to work the rest of the weekend."

Taylor paced the Chants with a first round score of 70, 2-under par on Friday, as the junior was 3-under par after 15 holes of play. He totaled four birdies and 12 pars to put himself in a tie for 22nd overall after one day of play. Taylor posted a team-best par-4 scoring average of 3.80, -2, on Friday.

Fort is just one stroke behind Taylor with his first round score of 71, 1-under par. The junior was consistent throughout the first 18 holes of play, carding two birdies, 15 pars and one bogey to end the day in a tie for 31st overall heading into the weekend.

Senior Morgan Deneen had his best round of the fall season on Friday, turning in a team-high five birdies en route to a round of 72, even par, and a tie for 34th overall. Deneen registered a par-5 scoring average of 4.50, -2, and a par-3 scoring average of 3.00, even, on Friday.

Fellow senior Luis Ruiz totaled 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys to finish Friday in a tie for 40th overall with his round of 73, +1, while Wes Artac closed out his first 18 holes of play with three birdies and three pars over his last six holes to end the day in a tie for 51st with his first round score of 74, +2.

Playing as an individual in his season debut, senior Daniel Overas shot a first round 74, +2. He tallied three birdies and 11 pars to head into the second round of play on Saturday in a tie for 51st-place overall. Overas recorded a team-best par-3 scoring average of 2.75, -1, on the day.

Host ETSU (270, -18) leads the tournament after 18 holes of play. Kent State (276, -12), Louisville (277, -11), Tennessee (277, -11) and Missouri (281, -7) round out the top five of the team leaderboard.

Round two of the three-round event will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET tomorrow morning.
