Taylor Climbs Into Top-10 With Second Round 66

Coastal Carolina men’s golf turned in a fall season low team round of 281 on Saturday
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Coastal Carolina junior Zack Taylor carded a team-low round 66, 6-under par, to lead the Chanticleer men's golf team to an 18-hole team score of 281, 7-under par, on Saturday on day two of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by ETSU at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges golf course in Jonesborough, Tenn.
The Chants climbed up a spot on the team leaderboard, moving into seventh-place with a two-round combined team score of 567, 9-under par. Coastal is in front of East Carolina (572, -4), Virginia (573, -3), UNC Wilmington (574, -2), Penn State (576, even), VCU (577, +1), Furman (578, +2) and Villanova (595, +19).
ETSU is holding on to a two-stroke lead with a tournament low score of 549, -27. Kent State (551, -25), Tennessee (555, -21), Louisville (556, -20), Missouri (565, -11) and Virginia Tech (565, -11) round out the top five.
As a team, Coastal ranks second in the tournament field in par-4 scoring average at 3.95, -5, and in total pars with 119 as a team.
"A very solid round out of Zack today. We really needed it," said head coach Jim Garren. "We still struggled overall for the day. It's not lack of effort because the guys are definitely fighting. We just have to execute better. There's a lot of birdie opportunities out here and we have to take advantage. We need a low round tomorrow to try and move up the leaderboard."
Following his first round of 70, 2-under par, on Friday, Taylor carded a CCU low round of 66, 6-under par, on Saturday to move into a tie for sixth-place overall with his 36-hole score of 136, 8-under par. The junior has posted a par-4 scoring average of 3.75, -5, and is fourth in the tournament field with 11 birdies over the first two rounds of play.
Taylor's round of 66, which included seven birdies and a 32, 4-under par, on the back nine, is the lowest 18-hole score of his Chanticleer career. His 36-hole score of 136 is tied for the seventh-lowest 36-hole individual score in CCU history, while his round of 66 is tied for the ninth-best 18-hole score in Coastal history.
Senior Luis Ruiz dropped three strokes off his first round 73, +1, with a 70, 2-under par, over his second round of play on Saturday. Ruiz totaled four birdies and 12 pars over his 18 holes, shooting 1-under par on both the front and back nine, to end the day in a tie for 34th overall with his 36-hole score of 143, 1-under par. He has totaled 27 pars over his first 36-holes of the three-round event.
Fellow Chant senior Morgan Deneen fired a second round 73, +1. Coupled with his first round 72, even par, Deneen is in 47th-place overall with a 36-hole score of 145, +1, heading into the final round of play on Sunday. The senior recorded five birdies, but also shot four bogeys for the round.
CCU's Wes Artac got back on track on Saturday, as the senior transfer posted a round of 72, even par, after shooting an opening round of 74, +2, on Friday. Artac, who closed out his round with three birdies over his last five holes, is in a tie for 48th overall with a 36-hole score of 146, +2.
Tied with Artac in 48th-place overall after two rounds of play is States Fort with rounds of 71 and 75. The junior recorded 15 pars over his 18 holes on Saturday to head into the final round of play with a two-round score of 146, +2. Fort leads the Chants and is second in the tournament field with 30 pars over the first two rounds of play.
Playing as an individual, senior Daniel Overas followed up his first round 74, +2, on Friday with a second round 78, +6, on Saturday. The fourth-year Chant heads into the final round of play on Sunday in a tie for 74th overall with his 36-hole score of 152, +10.
The final round of play is set for an 8:30 a.m. ET start time tomorrow morning.
