Chanticleers to Conclude Fall Slate at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

CCU men’s golf returns to the links for its final fall event this weekend
Conway, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's golf team will wrap up its 2018 fall season this weekend, Oct. 12-14, at the highly competitive Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by East Tennessee State University at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
The 21st playing of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate will play par-72 and 7,147 yards for the 54-hole event. Each round will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET with teams teeing off from holes No. 1 and No. 10.
"It is a quick turnaround for us, but we are excited to get back out and play after coming off a nice week last week at Maridoe," said head coach Jim Garren. "This is the first event this year in our own time zone and a golf course we are familiar with."
The three-day event consists of a strong field with five top 50 nationally ranked teams (Golfweek) and seven schools that have won this event in the past, including the Chants who took home the team title in 2008.
No. 6 Tennessee, No. 12 Louisville, No. 15 Penn State, the defending champions, No. 44 Virginia and No. 50 Kent State headline the tournament field which also includes East Carolina, Furman, Missouri, UNCW, VCU, Villanova, Virginia Tech, host ETSU and the Chants.
Less than one week after a top-five team finish at the Maridoe Intercollegiate, the Chants return to the links, but this time with a different lineup than in the few weeks past. After his runner-up finish a week ago, senior Wes Artac will play in the No. 1 spot this weekend for the Chants followed by No. 2 Zack Taylor, No. 3 Luis Ruiz, No. 4 Morgan Deneen and No. 5 States Fort. Senior Daniel Overas will make his season debut at the tournament, playing as an individual.
Coming off his best round as a Chanticleer in which he carded a season-low 68 on Monday over the final round of play at the inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate, Artac has posted a stroke average of 73.67 over his 12 rounds of play this fall. The Texas native has totaled three rounds of par or better this season and is coming off his best 54-hole score as a Chant with his 215, +5, last weekend.
CCU's leader this fall season has been Taylor, as the first-year Chant has recorded a team-low 72.92 stroke average over Coastal's four events this fall. Taylor, who has four rounds of par or better to date, has two top-20 finishes this season including a 16th-place showing last weekend with his 54-hole score of 221, +11.
Seniors Ruiz and Deneen will look to close out their fall slates on a high note, as both veteran golfers finished tied for 31st in the event last season with matching 54-hole scores of 216, even par. Last year on this course, Deneen posted two rounds of par or better shooting back-to-back rounds of 71 over the final two rounds of play, while Ruiz posted a team-low round 67 in the opening round at the 2017 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate last fall.
Fort, who was tied for the individual lead after 18 holes of play last week at the Maridoe Intercollegiate, will look to get back on track this week where he finished last year in a tie for 36th-place overall with a 54-hole score of 217, +1, which included two rounds of par or better for his three rounds of play.
Overas will be making his season debut this weekend at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The senior played in nine events last year for CCU, posing a stroke average of 74.00 and a first-place finish at the 2018 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
"We had a nice showing last year and we will look to improve on that. It's another good field with teams like Louisville, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia and more. It'll be a tough test, but that's what we want," continued Garren.
