Coastal and Winthrop Split In Non-Conference Play On Tuesday

March 27, 2018

Game 1 Stats | Game 2 Stats

ROCK HILL, SC - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (17-17) traveled to Winthrop University on Tuesday afternoon at Terry Field to face the Eagles (13-13) in a non-conference battle of former Big South foes. The Chanticleers and the Eagles split the afternoon's contests. Freshman Kaitlin Beasley-Polko was able to pick up her ninth win over the Eagles in game one by the score of 3-0 by throwing a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out eight. In game two, Coastal fell to the Eagles in five innings by the score of 11-3.

Game 1

Blake Walert doubled down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning and the next batter, Kaleigh Romine was plunked by a Beasley-Polko pitch. The freshman pitcher was about to get out of the jam as she was able to get the next two batters to pop up to first baseman Kassidy Smith. Walert who started the rally, ended her team's rally as she got caught stealing at third base.

Juniors Alexis Alvino and Natalie David both worked their way on with walks and then after a fielder's choice by Courtney Dean, Kailey Mellen came through with a single down the right-field line to bring in Natalie David from second base and give the Chanticleers the first score of the game and the lead 1-0.

In the top of the seventh, freshman Stavi Augur led off with a walk and then David secured the victory with her fourth homer of the season.

Game 2

Continuing where they left off in the first game, Kass Smith got the game started in game two with a lead-off double lead-off. Two batters later, freshman Courtney Dean was able to hit a two-run homer and her eighth homer of the season to give the Chants a 2-0 lead at the end of the first. Smith came up in the third with one out and yanked a 2-2 pitch down the left field line for her sixth big home run of the season.

All momentum stopped there for the Chanticleers in the game from that point forward.

In the bottom of the third, Ashleigh Westbrooks, doubled and then moved over on the groundout to Stavi Augur at third. Winthrop picked up their first run of the game with bunt down to Augur, but with nobody covering first base, the defense Coastal was unable to pick up an out.

The momentum officially changed in top of fourth. With Coastal just needing one out in the inning, Chant shortstop Alexis Alvino fielded the ball cleanly, but an errant throw allowed Shayna Covington to reach first base. Next batter, Ashley Westbrooks tied the game, 3-3, with her third homer of the season. Winthrop scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth as they went onto win 11-3. In the inning, the Eagles picked up for singles and the big blow came off reliever Beasley-Polko as she gave up the walk-off grand slam.

Chants' starter Ashley Guillette took the loss for her team in game two, dropping her to 8-8 on the season. The junior couldn't regain the momentum she had going for her earlier in the game as she allowed six runs in her final .2 innings of work.

The Chanticleers return to the field this weekend as they travel to the University Louisiana-Monroe for Sun Belt Conference action. On Friday, Chants take on the Warhawks at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. est and then come back and wrap up the three-game set at 1 p.m. est on Saturday.
