Chants Continue Fall Slate at 2018 Northern Intercollegiate

Men’s golf to play this weekend in Sugar Grove, Illinois
Conway, S.C. – After wrapping up the 2018 Gopher Invitational on Monday, the Chanticleer men's golf team, which has been on the road for the entire week due to the closing of the Coastal Carolina University campus and the evacuation of the South Carolina coast because of Hurricane Florence, will return to competition this weekend at the 2018 Northern Intercollegiate in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
The 54-hole tournament hosted by Northern Illinois University will be played on Sept. 15-16 at the par-72, 7,281-yards Rich Harvest Farm golf course. The tournament will consist of two rounds, 36 holes of play, on Saturday and will conclude with a final 18 holes on Sunday.
"This is a big week for us and a huge opportunity," stated head coach Jim Garren. "Obviously this week has been a little different for us staying on the road, but we are getting work in and should be ready to go this weekend."
The two-day tournament field consists of 14 teams in Coastal Carolina, Augusta, Aurora, Grand Canyon, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, UMKC, Wisconsin and host NIU. A number of schools, including UCLA, will have a number of individuals play as well.
With the team remaining in the Midwest due to the hurricane, the Chants are sending out the same team for the Northern Intercollegiate with freshman Brady Hinkle competing as an individual. However, coach Garren has altered the lineup just a bit for this weekend in No. 1 Luis Ruiz, No. 2 States Fort, No. 3 Zack Taylor, No. 4 Wes Artac, and No. 5 Morgan Deneen.
Playing in the number one spot last weekend, Ruiz carded a 54-hole score of 223, +10, to finish in a tie for 52nd overall. However, the senior saved his best round for last, shooting a 70, 1-under par, on Monday to lead the Chants to a team round of 285.
Fort, who matched Ruiz with a tournament score of 223, +10, and a 52nd-place finish at the 2018 Gopher Invitational, carded a low round 73, +2, over the first round of the season-opening event last weekend. He followed with rounds of 74 and 76, but was perhaps the steadiest golfer throughout the opening rounds of the fall season.
Taylor moved up from the five spot to the number three hole, as the newcomer led the Chants with a 54-hole low round score of 218, +5, last week at the highly touted Gopher Invitational. Taylor posted rounds of 72, 75 and 71 to finish in a tie for 28th overall.
Both Artac and Deneen return to the links having improved over each and every round last weekend in Minnesota. Artac recorded rounds of 77, 75 and 71 in his CCU debut to place in a tie for 52nd with a three-round combined score of 223, +10. Deneen bounced back from an opening round 79 to shoot rounds of 75 and 73 for a 54-hole score of 227, +14.
Hinkle, who will tee off as an individual this weekend at the Northern Intercollegiate, placed in a four-way tie for 12th-place overall with a 54-hole score of 217, +1, last weekend at the Pioneer Creek Collegiate.
