Darkness Ends Day One Early at Northern Intercollegiate

Chanticleers are tied for seventh on the team leaderboard
Sugar Grove, Ill. – Coastal Carolina men's golf team was 1-under par as a team in the second round before play was suspended due to darkness on Saturday at the 2018 Northern Intercollegiate hosted by Northern Illinois University at the Rich Harvest Farms golf course in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
After shooting a first round 305, +17, the Chanticleers were fighting their way back up the team leaderboard in the second round where as a team CCU was 1-under par through 14 holes before darkness suspended play.
With all 14 teams through 13 holes of play in round two, the Chanticleers are in a tie for seventh-place overall with Michigan at +16.
"This was a big afternoon round for us. Our guys fought hard to get back into the tournament," commented head coach Jim Garren. "Our start this morning was a disaster, as we came out completely flat. Zack had a great day to put himself in contention. We've got to go out and put a good round together tomorrow."
Perhaps the most disappointed golfer to see play suspended was CCU's Zack Taylor, as the junior was 5-under par through 16 holes in the second round of play on Saturday. With his first round 74, +2, and his strong second round, Taylor is tied for first-place overall at 3-under par. In his second round, Taylor had five birdies and had eagled the par-5 No. 2 hole before play was called. For the day, Taylor totaled eight birdies, an eagle and posted a par-5 scoring average of 4.25 (-6).
Senior Luis Ruiz carded a first round 73, +1, in the morning session and sits at +1 through 15 holes in round two, placing him in a tie for 20th overall. The No. 1 player for the Chants totaled a team-high 20 pars and six birdies over his first 33 holes of play.
Wes Artac will enter Sunday in a tie for 47th-place overall at +8 having shot a 78, +6, over his first round and is at +2 through 16 holes in his second round of play.
Both Morgan Deneen and States Fort carded rounds of 80, +8, over the first 18 holes of play, but were shooting better in the second round before play was halted. Deneen was only +1 through his 15 holes of play in round two, while Fort was at +4 with four holes remaining.
Marquette (-3), Missouri (+4) and Notre Dame (+9) are 1-3 in the team standings through roughly 31 holes of play.
The tournament field will conclude round two tomorrow morning before playing the final 18 holes of the 54-hole event.
