Junior Zack Taylor posted a runner-up individual finish this weekend
Sugar Grove, Ill. – Junior Zack Taylor turned in a 54-hole score of 214, 2-under par, to earn individual runner-up honors and lead the Coastal Carolina men's golf team to a fifth-place team finish over the weekend at the 2018 Northern Intercollegiate hosted by Northern Illinois University at the Rich Harvest Farms golf course in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
Following a first round team score of 305, +17, on Saturday morning, the Chanticleers posted rounds of 291, +3, and 290, +2, to finish tied for fifth-place overall with UMKC at 886, +22. CCU's final round of 290 was tied for the fifth-best team score over the final round of play on Sunday.
The teams had to finish the second round of play on Sunday after it was suspended due to darkness on Saturday night.
"I am proud of our effort over these final two rounds," head coach Jim Garren stated. "We battled hard, but we struggled the final 30 minutes today. It was as bad as the start yesterday, but we will take some lessons from this. We have to be mentally sharp and stick with the game plan regardless if its hole 1 or hole 54."
Playing in only his second tournament for CCU, Taylor posted rounds of 74, 68 and 72 to finish in second-place overall with a 54-hole score of 214, 2-under par. Taylor ranked in the top 14 of the tournament field in par-5 (4.50, -6), par-4 (4.10, +3) and par-3 (3.08, +1) scoring over the two-day event. He also posted a team-high 31 pars, 11 birdies and an eagle over his 54-holes of play.
"What a great performance by Zack this week. It is an impressive start to his career," continued Garren. "He felt the nerves a bit today and it probably cost him a shot or two. That's the difference in winning and not winning."
Placing in a tie for 16th overall was Luis Ruiz, as the senior finished with a three-round combined score of 220, +4 (73-74-73). For the three rounds, Ruiz was fifth in par-4 scoring at 4.07, +2, and in birdies with 13 overall, six of which came on Sunday over his final 18 holes of play.
Finishing three shots behind Ruiz was fellow CCU upperclassmen Wes Artac (78-74-71) who carded a team-low round 71, 1-under par, on Sunday to finish tied for 28th with a tournament score of 223, +7. His final round included an eagle, three birdies and 10 pars.
Senior Morgan Deneen (80-75-75) finished tied for 57th overall with his 54-hole score of 230, +14, while junior States Fort (80-79-74) bounced back from a first round 80, +8, to shoot a final round 74, +2, to place in a tie for 68th overall. Both Chants registered four birdies apiece over their final round of play.
Playing as an individual for the second-straight event, freshman Brady Hinkle turned in rounds of 78, 81 and 77 to finish in a tie for 74th-place overall with his three-round score of 236, +20.
"It was a solid week overall given the adversity of the last 10 days," Garren commented. "We just have to get better."
Marquette (874, +10) won the team event, as the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead from the start with a first round 281, 7-under par, on Saturday.
Notre Dame (875, +11), Missouri (879, +15) and Ohio State (881, +17) placed second, third and fourth overall, respectively, in the team standings.
The Chants will return to action in two weeks when they head west to compete in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Sept. 28-29 in Albuquerque, N.M.
