Men’s Golf Goes West for William H. Tucker Intercollegiate

Coastal Carolina men’s golf will returns to action this weekend in New Mexico
Conway, S.C. – In what has been an unusual start to the 2018 fall season for the men's golf team due to Hurricane Florence, the Chanticleers will head back out on the road to compete this weekend at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico at the UNM Championship South Golf Course on Sept. 28-29 in Albuquerque, N.M.
The 54-hole tournament hosted by New Mexico University will be held at the par-72, 7,555-yards UNM Championships Golf Course. The tournament will consist of two rounds with 36 holes of play on Friday and the final 18 holes on Saturday.
"We are excited to get back out and compete this weekend," said head coach Jim Garren. "The Tucker Intercollegiate is one of the oldest and most historic events in the country. The field this year is really good. As always, New Mexico is tough on its home course plus teams such as UNLV, Arkansas, Pepperdine and several other really strong programs are going to be there this year."
The tournament field this weekend consists of 17 teams in Coastal Carolina, Air Force, No. 17 Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska, New Mexico State, UT Arlington, Pepperdine, San Diego State, UTEP, No. 23 UNLV, Wyoming and host New Mexico.
Midway through its fall schedule, the Chanticleers are going with a lineup with a number of familiar faces in No. 1 Luis Ruiz, No. 2 Wes Artac, No. 3 Zack Taylor, No. 4 Brady Hinkle and No. 5 States Fort. Freshman Connor Newton will be making his Chants debut as an individual at the two-day event.
Playing in the number one spot for the third-straight event, Ruiz has posted a stroke average of 73.89 over six rounds of play this fall and is coming off a 54-hole score of 220, +4, two weeks ago at the 2018 Northern Intercollegiate. Over his last four rounds of play, Ruiz has shot a 70, 73, 74 and 73, and will look to continue his strong play this weekend in New Mexico.
Artac has been perhaps the most consistent CCU golfer thus far this season, as the senior has recorded back-to-back 54-hole scores of 223 over his first two events as a Chanticleer. With two rounds at par or better this season, both of which were rounds of 71, Artac has turned in a stroke average of 74.33 thus far this year, his first as a Chanticleer.
Leading the Chants at both the 2018 Gopher Invitational (Sept. 9-10) and the 2018 Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 15-16), Taylor is off to a great start to his fall season. With a scoring average of 72.00 over six rounds, a low round of 68 and a runner-up individual finish last time out at the Northern Intercollegiate, the junior will look to continue his strong start this weekend at the highly competitive Tucker Intercollegiate.
Breaking into the lineup after competing as an individual twice this season, Hinkle will look to make an impact for the Chants this weekend. Over his first six rounds of play this fall, the freshman has posted a scoring average of 75.50, which includes a low round of 70 at the Pioneer Creek Intercollegiate on Sept. 14-15.
Fort will round out the CCU lineup, as the junior golfer will look to build on his final round 74, +2, at the Northern Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Fort rebounded from a slow start at the Northern Intercollegiate to finish strong and will attempt to build on that momentum this weekend.
A freshman from Auburn, Ala., Newton will be making his CCU debut this weekend as an individual.
"I'm looking forward to our guys competing hard and seeing them adjust to playing at elevation," continued coach Garren. "It's going to be a fun week."
