Coastal Carolina men’s golf posted a 36-hole team score of 591 on Friday at the Tucker Intercollegiate

Albuquerque, N.M. – Coastal Carolina's Luis Ruiz and Zack Taylor each posted one round of par or better on Friday, as the Chanticleer men's golf team posted team scores of 296 and 295 to end day one tied for 10th-place overall with a 36-hole team score of 591, +15, on day one of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Chants are tied for 10th-place with New Mexico State (591, +15) on the team leaderboard and are just one stroke behind ninth-place Denver (590, +14). No. 23 UNLV leads the tournament with a day one team score of 562, 14-under par, and his followed by BYU (565, -11), Pepperdine (568, -8) and Arkansas (571, -5).

"Disappointing end to the day as we dropped about eight shots coming in on the easier holes. We had some serious momentum heading to an easy stretch and didn't take advantage of it," head coach Jim Garren stated. "Overall, the guys fought hard today, we just have to do better on holes 12 and 18 because those are easy holes. We will come up with a better game plan there tomorrow."

Ruiz turned in a first round score of 74, +2, before shooting a CCU low round 70, 2-under par, over the second round of play to finish the day in a tie for 23rd-place overall with a 36-hole score of 144, even par. The senior golfer ranks second in the tournament field with a par-3 scoring average at 2.88, -1, and totaled 25 pars and six birdies on Friday.

Taylor led the Chants for round one with a 72, ever par, before shooting a second round 76, +4, to end the day in a tie for 46th overall with his two-round combined score of 148, +4. The first-year Chant posted a par-5 scoring average of 4.75, -2, and totaled a team-high seven birdies on the day.

"Luis was steady today and Zack had another nice day with the exception of No. 10 in the second round," commented coach Garren.

CCU's States Fort (75-74) and Wes Artac (75-75) sit right behind Taylor with respective 36-hole scores of 149, +5, and 150, +6. Fort recorded a team-best par-5 scoring average of 4.50, -4, and posted 22 pars to go along with five birdies to put himself in a tie for 52nd-place, while Artac turned in 20 pars and six birdies over his 36-holes of play to place in a tie for 62nd overall.

Rounding out the lineup for the Chants was freshman Brady Hinkle who posted rounds of 77 and 78 to finish with a 36-hole score of 155, +11, good enough for a tie at 83rd-place overall. The freshman registered 21 pars over his 36 holes of play and posted a par-5 scoring average of 4.88, -1, on the day.

Playing as an individual in his Coastal Carolina debut, freshman Connor Newton shot a first round 76, +4, and a second round 80, +8, to finish the day with a two-round combined score of 156, +12.

The Chants will wrap up the two-day event with the final 18 holes of play tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. MDT.
