CHARLESTON, S.C. – With a match that was moved to Charleston due to Hurricane Florence and in a battle of nationally-ranked teams, it was the 15th ranked Pilots of Portland who came away with a hard fought 2-1 victory over #24 Coastal Carolina.
Portland was the third nationally-ranked team the Chants had played this season, and like the others it was a close battle.
Portland scored first in the 36
th minute when RJ Stretch was able to knock in a pass from Benji Michel to put the Pilots up 1-0.
It did not take long for CCU to even things up as
Henrik Mueller scored on a header off a corner kick from
Saif AlHameli just one minute later. That would be all the scoring in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half it was much of the same as both teams had opportunities to score, but it was Michel with a header on a corner kick from Gio Magana-Rivera to put Portland up 2-1.
The Chants had several more shots, but could not find the back of the net in the one goal loss.
Portland finished the game with 14 shots and four on goal, while CCU had 12 shots and two on goal.
CCU goalkeeper Chris Datallo once again had a solid match with two saves in his 90 minutes of action.
CCU will face another nationally-ranked opponent when Maryland invades Conway to face the Chants Sunday Sept. 30 for a 1 p.m. match.
