Conway, S.C. – For the eighth-straight year, the Coastal Carolina men's golf team will tee up at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by East Tennessee State University this weekend, Oct. 11-13, at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
The Chanticleers have competed in this fall tournament every year since 2012 and won the event in 2008. At last year's event, the Chanticleers finished sixth out of 14 teams after placing in a tie for fifth-place overall in 2017.
The three-day, 54-hole invitational will be played on the par-72, 7,147-yards Blackthorn Club at the Ridges Golf Course with all three rounds scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with teams going off from holes No. 1 and No. 10.
The 15-team tournament field this year includes six former champions in Virginia (2010, 2013 and 2016), No. 16 Tennessee (2004, 2006 and 2009), Virginia Tech (2007), Coastal Carolina (2008), Missouri (2012), Penn State (2017) and host ETSU (2019). No. 12 Louisville, East Carolina, Furman, NC State, Ole Miss, UNC Wilmington, VCU and Villanova round out the participating teams this weekend.
"We are excited to be going back to Tennessee," stated head coach Jim Garren. "This event is a staple on our schedule and we love going back each year. Each year there is a solid field, the event is very well run, and it is a good golf course for us to play. It's going to be a good challenge again for us this week."
The Chanticleers will send out the lineup of No. 1 Zack Taylor, No. 2 Brady Hinkle, No. 3 States Fort, No. 4 Seth Taylor, and No. 5 Gavin Noble this weekend, while sophomore Connor Newton will compete as an individual.
Playing in the No. 1 position for the third time this fall season, Zack Taylor leads the team with a stroke average of 70.67 over his first six rounds of play this year. He has totaled five rounds of par or better, including a low-round 69 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in which he placed in a tie for sixth-place overall at the highly-touted collegiate event. The senior enters the weekend with five-straight rounds of par or better and has posted two-straight top-15 finishes to start the season.
Hinkle returns to the lineup after missing the Chants' last event back on Sept. 27-28. Playing in the No. 3 spot in the lineup in the fall opener at the 2019 Badger Invitational on Sept. 8-10, the sophomore posted rounds of 76, 76 and 72 to finish the 54-hole event with a tournament score of 224, +8.
Fort ranks second on the team in stroke average this season at 73.67, which includes three rounds of par or better over his six rounds of play. The fourth-year senior has been up-and-down thus far this fall season, posting a low round 68 in the second round of the Badger Invitational after carding a first-round 77 to start play. At last year's Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate event, the Georgia native carded rounds of 71, 75 and 71 to finish one over at 217.
Seth Taylor continues to play his way into the Coastal lineup this season, as the freshman will tee off in his third event of the fall season this weekend in Tennessee. The first-year Chant has finished tied for 21st overall at the Badger Invitational with a 54-hole score of 216, even par, in the fall opener but then struggled with the elevation and course with a score of 232, +16, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico last time out.
Playing in his second-straight event for Coach Garren's squad is Noble. The freshman made his CCU debut two weeks ago at the Tucker Intercollegiate, carding rounds of 74, 76 and 80 to place in a tie for 69th overall with a three-round score of 230, +14.
Newton will compete in the fall event as an individual this weekend after playing in the Coastal lineup in each of the previous two events. The sophomore has posted a stroke average of 75.83 over his six rounds of play this season and carded a tournament score of 220, +4, at the 2019 Badger Invitational to open up the fall slate.
