Coastal Carolina men’s golf senior Zack Taylor is tied for 10th overall
Jonesborough, Tenn. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team had three players shoot under par and a fourth Chanticleer card a round one even-par to record a team score of 282, -6 under par, to finish day one of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in seventh-place overall.
The Chanticleers' 282 is just two shots out of the top-five and nine shots behind the first-round tournament leader in No. 16 Tennessee at 273, -15 under par.
CCU's 282 is tied for the lowest-team round of the 2019 fall season to date, matching back-to-back rounds of 282 over the second and third rounds of play at the 2019 Badger Invitational on Sept. 9 and 10.
No. 12 Louisville (274, -14), Furman (277, -11), UNCW (280, -8) and NC State (280, -8) round out the top-five on the team leaderboard, while host ETSU (281, -7) is sixth and one shot ahead of the Chants.
"We just didn't make enough birdies today. We were in a decent spot to have a nice round but dropped some coming into the clubhouse," head coach Jim Garren commented. "Not a bad day today, just not good enough of a day to be higher up on the team leaderboard. We just didn't have anyone get it super low which you need out here. Overall a steady day and we need to climb the board tomorrow."
For the sixth-straight round, senior Zack Taylor shot under par, carding a first-round 69, -3 under, on Friday to place in a tie for 10th-place overall. The second-year Chant was steady all day long, carding four birdies, one bogey and 13 pars on the opening round of play.
Fellow senior States Fort followed with his best round of the fall season, a first-round 70, -2 under par, to end the day in a tie for 19th overall. Fort was three-under on the front nine with birdies on holes No. 4, No. 8 and No. 9, en route to his 70 on Friday.
Freshman Seth Taylor turned in a round of 71, -1 under par, for his second sub-par round of the fall season. The first-year Chant birdied hole No. 1 and two more holes on the back nine to go along with 13 pars to finish in a tie for 28th overall.
Recording a 72, even par, on Friday was Brady Hinkle to place in a tie for 39th overall heading into the weekend. The sophomore started both the front nine and the back nine with a birdie and added another birdie on hole No. 11 to shoot a 36, even par, on both nines for the day.
Carding his best round as a Chant, freshman Gavin Noble registered an opening round 73, +1, on Friday to place in a tie for 49th. The Georgia native bounced back from an up-and-down front nine 38, +2, that saw four bogeys, two birdies, and three pars, to shoot a 35, -1 under par, on the back nine highlighted by one birdie and six pars.
Playing as an individual, Connor Newton posted a first-round score of 74, +2, to conclude the first day of play in a tie for 54th overall. The sophomore recorded 10 pars and one birdie over his first 11 holes of play before a bogey on the par-3 No. 12 and a double-bogey on the par-4 No. 15 pushed his back nine up to a 39, +3.
The second round of play is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.
