DALLAS – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team will face highly-ranked Southern Methodist University (SMU) in second round action of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.
The Chants will again be on the road and will face the Mustangs on its' home field, Westcott Stadium. The Mustangs sport one of the top records in the nation at 16-1-1. They are the eighth overall seed in the NCAA Championship despite being ranked third in the latest
College Soccer News and TopDrawer Soccer polls. SMU is also rated high in both the Soccer America poll (5
th) and in the United Soccer Coaches poll (6
th).
The Mustangs earned its automatic berth in the championship by defeating Central Florida 1-0 in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament, and with its national seeding, SMU was awarded a first-round bye in the championship.
SMU has one of the top scoring offenses in the nation scoring 170 points on 58 goals and 54 assists. They have multiple players that have scored over 20 points led by Garrett McLaughlin with 35 (15 goals/5 assists). Eddie Munjoma has scored 29 (11 g/7 a), Knut Ahlander has 25 (7 g/ 11 a) and Gabriel Costa has 23 (7 g/ 9 a).
CCU (10-7-3) enters the game on the heels of a six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) and after defeating Georgia State on penalty kicks after a double-overtime draw, the Chants took North Carolina State into double overtime before pulling out a 3-2 victory over the Wolfpack in first round action played in Raleigh.
Tyrone Mondi leads CCU with 18 points on seven goals and four assists. He has four game-winning goals this season. Freshman
Sam Snaith has 17 points on a team-high eight goals and an assist.
Alberto Ciroi continues to have a solid season as the All-Sun Belt honoree has 52 saves on the season and a 1.09 goals against average and five shutouts.
The Mustangs and Chanticleers have never met on the pitch and today's first-ever meeting is set for Sunday, Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. (ET).
