Seth Taylor Shoots 67 on Day One of Saint Mary’s Invitational

Coastal Carolina men’s golf freshman carded the lowest round of the fall for the Chants on Monday
Pebble Beach, Calif. – Coastal Carolina freshman golfer Seth Taylor posted a low round 67, -4 under par, on Monday to lead the men's golf team to a first-round team score of 289, +5, at the Saint Mary's Invitational held at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Taylor's round of 67 is the lowest of his young career at CCU and is the lowest 18-hole score for a Chant golfer this season.
"A really solid round out of Seth today," stated head coach Jim Garren. "As a group we just need to clean a few things up. We had a nice effort level today but just have to play better overall."
Taylor's round of 67 on Monday, which has him in a tie for fourth-place overall after 18 holes of play, included three birdies, three pars and three bogeys on the front nine but came to fruition on the back nine where he shot -4 under par with four birdies and five pars.
Behind Taylor was senior States Fort with a first-round 72, +1, and freshman Gavin Noble with a 74, +3. Fort carded three birdies and 11 pars en route to his 72 and will enter play on Tuesday in a tie for 42nd overall, while Noble recorded three birdies all on the front nine to go along with nine pars overall to finish the day in a tie for 65th-place.
Sophomore Brady Hinkle and senior Zack Taylor finished the day with rounds of 76, +5, and 77, +6, respectively on day one of the three-day event. Hinkle rebounded from a front nine 41, +6, to shoot -1 under par on the back nine with two birdies and seven pars. Taylor struggled off the opening tee, as he totaled just one birdie over his 18-hole day.
As an individual, Tyler Gray shot a first-round 75, +4, which included a birdie on both the front and back nine to put him in a tie for 74th overall heading into day two of play on Tuesday.
As a team, the Chants are in 12th-place overall with their score of 289, +5. CCU is just nine strokes out of fifth-place overall on the team leaderboard.
No. 20 Colorado State is the 18-hole team leader with a first round score of 267, -17 under par, while No. 6 Brigham Young is second at 276, -8 under par.
No. 14 Arizona (278, -6), New Mexico (279, -5) and No. 17 Oregon State (280, -4) round out the top five on the team leaderboard.
Day two of play at the Saint Mary's Invitational will tee off on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. PT/10:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring can be found HERE.
