Coastal Carolina men’s golf freshman leads the tournament field with one round to play

Pebble Beach, Calif. – After shooting a first-round 67, -4 under par, on Monday, Coastal Carolina freshman golfer Seth Taylor dropped a stroke off his second round to card a 66, -5 under par, and end the day atop of the individual standings with a 36-hole score of 133, -9 under par, at the Saint Mary's Invitational at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Taylor's score helped the Chanticleers to a second-round team score of 280, -4 under par, and push them into a tie for sixth-place overall on the team leaderboard at 569, +1.

The 280 is the lowest round of the fall season for the Chanticleers and put them just one stroke out of fifth-place heading into the final round on Tuesday.

Coastal is in a tie in sixth with San Francisco at 569, +1, while host Saint Mary's is in fifth-place one stroke ahead of both the Chants and the Dons at 568, even par.

"A solid day today. We moved up the board a good bit today but we still haven't had all five in it this week. We need a complete team effort tomorrow to keep moving up," head coach Jim Garren stated. "Big-time day out of the two freshmen. Seth is in contention for the individual title after another good round. I'm proud of Gavin's round today, especially after a slow start."

Taylor's 66 opened up with an eagle on the par-5 hole No. 1 and did not look back, totaling five birdies, 10 pars and two bogeys over his CCU career-low round. His round of 66 is tied for the 11th lowest 18-hole round in Coastal men's golf history.

Fellow freshman Gavin Noble also posted his CCU career low-round on Monday, as the Georgia native shot a 69, -2 under par, to jump up the leaderboard and into a tie for 35th with his 36-hole score of 143, +1. Noble totaled five birdies on his round, including closing out his day with par, birdie, par, and birdie.

Following his first-round 72, +1, senior States Fort turned in a second-round score of 73, +2, to end Tuesday in a tie for 47th-place overall with his 36-hole score of 145, +3. Fort had three birdies and 11 pars but was hampered by three bogeys over his final four holes of play.

Fellow senior Zack Taylor returned to his usual form after a first-round 77, +6, with a second-round score of 72, +1. The second-year Chant bounced back from a double-bogey on hole No. 1 to finish the front nine even par highlighted with three birdies. He finished the day with four birdies and 10 pars and moved up to a tie for 69th with a 36-hole score of 149, +8.

Rounding out the scoring for the Chants' lineup on Tuesday was sophomore Brady Hinkle with his round of 77, +6. Coupled with his first-round 76, +5, Hinkle is in a tie for 82nd-place with his 36-hole score of 153, +11.

Also shooting a 77, +6, on Tuesday was fellow sophomore Tyler Gray who is playing as an individual. With his first-round score of 75, +4, Gray is in a tie for 80th overall with his two-round combined score of 152, +10.

No. 20 Colorado State remains in the lead on the team leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 547, -21 under par. No. 14 Arizona (553, -15) and No. 6 Brigham Young (554, -14) are second and third, respectively.

The Chants will continue to look to move up the team leaderboard over the final round of play tomorrow at the Saint Mary's Invitational. Teams will tee off starting at 7:30 a.m. PT/10:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring can be found HERE.
