Sun Belt Men's Soccer Championship Bracket
CONWAY – Before tonight's soccer match between Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern, nine seniors were introduced and honored and it turned out a few of those seniors had a huge game in leading the Chanticleers to a 4-0 Sun Belt Conference win over the Eagles.
Senior
Tyrone Mondi led the Chants with two goals and an assist while freshman
Sam Snaith added the other two goals. Senior
Alberto Ciroi was in goal for CCU and came up with his fifth shutout of the season.
There was not much going on in the opening half until Mondi took a short pass from
Emile Rzepecki from just right of the goal and blasted a shot into the left corner of the goal for the first score. The goal came in the 39
th minute of action.
CCU's next goal came less than three minutes later when Snaith headed in a high pass from senior
Naty Endale to put CCU up 2-0, a lead which they would carry into halftime.
Both teams came out in the second half with more energy, but it was Mondi who came up with a bad Eagle pass to find himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper which he promptly blasted his shot past from short distance in the 49
th minute for the 3-0 lead.
The lead stayed that way until the 87
th minute when Mondi and Paavo Rihijarvi doubled up on an assist to Snaith for his second goal of the game.
CCU finished the game with 13 shots and seven of those on goal and held Georgie Southern to seven shots with one on goal. Both teams had five corner kicks.
CCU moves to 8-7-2 overall and more importantly 3-2 in Sun Belt action. Georgia Southern (7-8-2) had come into the match tied with CCU, Howard and Appalachian state with identical 2-2 conference records. The loss drops the Eagles to 2-3 in conference action.
The Chanticleers are playing their soccer of the season, winning two consecutive matches to close out the season and are 4-1-1 in their last six contests heading into the conference tournament.
With their win tonight, the Chants will enter next week's conference championship as the number two seed and will receive a first-round bye. Sun Belt newcomer Central Arkansas will enter the championship as the top seed. Coastal will play the winner of sixth-seeded Appalachian State and third-seeded Howard. The semifinal game is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15 with a 7 p.m. start time. This year the Sun Belt Championship will be played at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone, N.C., with Appalachian State being the host team.
