Game Notes
CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team has concluded its pre-conference action and will open Sun Belt play on the road with a trip to Alabama.
Conference action will begin Thursday, Dec. 19 with a 7 p.m. start at Troy, followed by a match against South Alabama Saturday, Dec. 21 at 4 p.m.
CCU enters conference action winners of four consecutive games. A win in Thursday's action will match the team's longest win streak of five games during the 2018-19 season.
This will be the seventh game between CCU and Troy with the Trojans holding a 4-2 lead in the series. Since the two programs started facing each other twice in conference action, neither team has won on its home court. The Chants defeated Troy in Troy in 2018 and 2019, while the Trojans returned the favor in each of those years in the HTC Center.
Keishawn Brewton continues to be CCU's leading scorer averaging 16.5 points per game. He is fifth in the conference in scoring and his .420 shooting percentage in second in the conference. Brewton is also shooting just over 83 percent from the free throw line which is fifth in the Sun Belt. Brewton knocked down five three's in the Chants win over North Carolina Central, giving him a team and league-leading 37 on the season.
DeVante' Jones could be playing the best basketball of his short career. He is averaging 15.7 points per game, ninth in the conference. He is leading the Sun Belt in assists per game (6.0) and in free throw percentage (.898).
While Brewton and Jones are having standout seasons, senior
Tyrell Gumbs-Frater has been leading the Chants outside shooting efforts. He is averaging a career-best 14.9 points per game and is shooting not only a team and conference leading, but a nation-leading 54.8 three-point shooting percentage. His 53.2 percent shooting percentage is also fourth in the conference.
Troy enters the action with three players leading the Trojans scoring efforts with Darian Adams averaging 13.4 points per game. He also leads the team in assists while shooting over 86 percent from the free throw line.
Desmond Williams has only played in Troy's past four games, but he has averaged 12.5 points per game and is the team's top field goal shooter (66.7 percent) and three-point shooter (55.6). He is also shooting 82 percent at the free throw line.
The third double-digit scorer for Troy just happens to be the team's leading rebounder. Zay Williams is also averaging 12.5 points per game and is grabbing 6.1 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 50 percent from the field.
