Dean's 7th Inning Homer Helps Chants Past Charleston Southern

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers picked up their fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday afternoon as they improved to 5-1 on the season, defeating the Charleston Southern Buccaneers by the score of 6-2 at the CSU Softball Complex. Sophomore Courtney Dean led the Chants  on the day going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.

The sophomore Dean broke open the 3-2 game in the top of the seventh inning with a three-run homer to center and second home run of the season as CCU never looked back.

Coastal Carolina picked up two runs in the top half of the first inning as the Chanticleers got an infield single by Mackenzie Beyer. The freshman beat out a throw by shortstop Madison Koger, but the errant ball got by the first baseman Jade Gandarra allowing another run to come around to score.

Charleston Southern answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own as Gandara singled in leadoff hitter Annie Bakenhus who singled to lead off her team's half of the first and Brooklyn Brewington who reached by a throwing error starting pitcher Ashley Guillette.

CCU picked up another run in the top of the third on the second error of the day by Charleston Southern third baseman SeaEnna Satcher bringing around Taylor Sweigart who doubled earlier in the inning.

Guillette got into trouble in the fourth inning when she gave up two singles and a hit batsman, but the fourth-year starter was able to strike out Sarah Brown for her only punch out of the day to end her day.

The Oxford, Connecticut native picked up her third win of the season going four innings and allowing two runs.

Kaitlin Beasley-Polko added her first save of the season by pitching the last three innings while striking out two.

Bucs' Arizona Pilgrim dropped to 1-4 as she  pitched a complete game in the loss giving up six hits, six runs, three earned.
