Men’s Golf Returns to Action this Weekend at the Furman Intercollegiate

Conway, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team returns to action this weekend at the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate held at the Furman University Golf Course from March 22-24 in Greenville, S.C.
The par 71, 6,994 yard golf course will consist of 21 teams in Akron, Charleston Southern, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Dartmouth, Davidson, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia State, High Point, Marshall, Minnesota, Presbyterian, Samford, USC Aiken, USC Upstate, Virginia Tech, Wichita State, Winthrop, Wofford and Yale.
"We are excited about getting up to Furman and competing once again," stated head coach Jim Garren. "We've shown some good things this year and this is our next opportunity to prove ourselves. We have put in some good work since the Hackler Championship last weekend and the guys are excited to keep playing."
The Chanticleers will send out the lineup of – No. 1 Zack Taylor, No. 2 Wes Artac, No. 3 Daniel Overas, No. 4 Morgan Deneen and No. 5 Brady Hinkle for the three-day event.
Taylor leads the team once again heading into play this weekend, as the junior has a team-best 72.10 stroke average on the season, which includes 10 rounds of par or better on the year. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native is coming off a 13th-place finish last time out in which he carded rounds of 69, 74 and 70 for a 54-hole score of 213, -3 under par.
Artac has been nothing but consistent this season for the Chants and will once again play in the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The senior transfer has posted a 54-hole score of 216 over each of his last three tournaments dating back to the fall season and has finished in the top three in the Chants lineup in every tournament on the year. He enters play this weekend at Furman with a 72.95 stroke average.
Overas has played his way into the lineup this weekend, as the senior carded a 54-hole score of 219, +3, to finish in a tie for 29th-place overall last weekend at the 2019 General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In three events this season, he has carded two rounds of par or better and posted a stroke average of 74.22, which is third on the team.
Deneen, who has tallied four rounds of par or better this season, will look to string together three solid rounds this weekend at the Furman Intercollegiate. In each of his first two spring events this year, Deneen has started out great with rounds below par over the first round of play but faded in the later rounds at each tournament. He has proven he is capable of scoring low, as the 2018 Sun Belt Tournament Champion shot rounds of 72, 73 and 70 for a 54-hole score of 215, -1 under par, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in October 2018.
Breaking into the lineup for the first time this spring, Hinkle will be competing in his fifth tournament as a Chant this weekend. The true freshman will look to bounce back from his final round of 82, +10, last weekend at the 2019 General Hackler Championship and return to the form that saw him shoot rounds of 71 and 72 over the first two rounds of play at the home event. In four tournaments this year, Hinkle has turned in three rounds of par or better.
Coastal Carolina's Sebastian Soderberg won the event back in 2012 with three-straight rounds of 68 and a final 54-hole score of 204, -9 under par.
The tournament will begin on Friday with the Chanticleers scheduled to tee off on hole No.10 beginning at 8:20 a.m. ET.
On day two of play on Saturday, the Chants will play in the afternoon session and will tee off on the front nine beginning at 12:20 p.m. ET.
The third and final round of the tournament will take place on Sunday beginning at 8:20 a.m. ET.
