Artac and Taylor Pace Chants Friday at Furman Intercollegiate

Coastal Carolina’s Artac and Taylor both posted rounds of 69 on day one of play
Greenville, S.C. – Coastal Carolina's Wes Artac and Zack Taylor both carded opening round scores of 69, -2 under par, on Friday to sit in a tie for first-place overall after one day of play at the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate hosted by Furman University at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
The Chanticleers' round of 282, -2 under par, puts Coastal in second-place overall after 18 holes of play, just one stroke back of first-round leader Virginia Tech (281, -3).
Davidson (283, -1), Furman (289, +5) and Yale (289, +5) round out the top five on the team leaderboard.
"We had an alright day today. The guys showed a lot of fight and effort all day. We got off to a really slow start and the finish was a little sloppy, but there was a lot of really good stuff in the middle," head coach Jim Garren said. "We need to clean up some of the sloppiness headed into tomorrow's play. Another great start by both Zach and Wes on the individual side but all our guys are in fine shape individually heading into play tomorrow."
Both Artac and Taylor are in a four-way tie atop of the player leaderboard after day one of play.
Artac's first round 69, -2 under par, included a 34, -1 under par, on the front nine and a 35, -1 under par, on the back nine and a total of three birdies, 14 pars and one birdie on the day.
Taylor matched Artac's 69 with four birdies, including three-straight on holes No. 2, 3 and 4 on the front nine. The junior shot a 33, -2 under par, on the front nine after shooting a 36, even par, on the back nine to start the round.
Senior Daniel Overas turned in a first round 71, even par, on day one, to place in a tie for 13th-place overall. He posted two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and one birdie and one bogey on the back nine to post a 36-36 for his round of 71.
Fellow senior Morgan Deneen had an up-and-down first round, as he began play with a birdie, five pars and three bogeys on the back nine to make the turn at 38, +2. However, the carded two birdies over the first four holes on the front nine to get back to even before shooting two bogeys over his final three holes of play on the day to finish in a tie for 26th-place overall with his 18-hole score of 73, +2.
Freshman Brady Hinkle ended his day in a tie for 41st with a first round score of 74, +3. The first-year Chant had two birdies, five bogeys and 11 pars over his first 18 holes of play, but ended both the back nine and front nine with a birdie.
The Chanticleers will return to the links tomorrow for the second round of play in the afternoon and will tee off on the front nine beginning at 12:20 p.m. ET.
The third and final round of the tournament will take place on Sunday beginning at 8:20 a.m. ET.
