Coastal Carolina will take a six-stroke lead into the final day of play on Sunday
Greenville, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's golf team posted a season-low team round score of 279, -5 under par, on Saturday to take a six-stroke lead into the final round of play on Sunday at the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate held at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
With rounds of 282 and 279 over the first two days of play, the Chants sit on top of the team leaderboard with a 36-hole team score of 561, -7 under par.
Davidson (567, -1) and host Furman (567, -1) are tied for second overall and six strokes back of the Chants, while Virginia Tech (573, +5) and Minnesota (576, +8) round out the top five.
Leading the way for the Chants is senior Wes Artac who is tied for first overall with his 36-hole score of 133, -9 under par. With his 133, -9, Artac, along with Furman's Kelly Harper, have tied the tournament record for the lowest individual 36-hole score.
"What a big-time round by Wes today and we needed it. Overall, we had a good effort from everyone today. Brady got a couple of birdies, Zack got one coming into the clubhouse as well and we finished our round off today which is a good sign," commented head coach Jim Garren. "We are sleeping on a final round lead for the first time this year, so tomorrow is going to be a fun day. It's going to be a completely different type of day though, as we are playing in foursomes and will have a shotgun start so it's going to be slow play all day. We are looking forward to coming out and trying to win a golf tournament."
Artac followed up his first round of 69, -2 under par, on Friday with a second round 64, -7 under par, on Saturday to stay in a tie for first-place overall at the end of the day. The senior carded two birdies to shoot a 33, -2 under par, on the front nine, then continued his strong play with six birdies and a 31, -5 under par, on the back nine.
CCU's Zack Taylor will also enter Sunday in the top five, as the junior carded a second round 71, even par, on Saturday to end the day in a tie for third overall with his 36-hole score of 140, -2 under par. He totaled four birdies on the day, including three on the front nine in which he shot a 34, -1 under par.
Senior Daniel Overas carded a second round score of 73, +2, in which he was up-and-down all day with five birdies, five bogeys, one double-bogey and seven pars. Coupled with his first round 71, he is tied for 18th overall with a two-round combined score of 144, +2.
Turning in perhaps his best round as a Chant in his young career, Brady Hinkle registered a 71, even par, over the second round of play to climb up into a tie at 24th-place overall with his 36-hole score of 145, +3. The freshman, who shot a 74, +3, in the opening round, totaled four birdies over his 18-holes of play on Saturday and bounced back from a 37, +2, on the front nine to shoot a 34, -2 under par, on the back nine.
Rounding out the scoring for the Chants was senior Morgan Deneen who shot a second round 77, +6, on Saturday. Deneen struggled on the front nine with a 41, +6, but rebounded on the back nine with two birdies and an even 36 to head into Sunday with a 36-hole score of 150, +8.
The third and final round of the tournament will take place on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
