Coastal Carolina men’s golf won the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate this weekend
Greenville, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's golf posted rounds of 282, 279 and 284 to post a tournament-best team score of 845, -7 under par, to win the team championship at the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate this weekend at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
The Chanticleers, led by individual runner-up Wes Artac, won the three-day event by four strokes over team runner-up Davidson College (849, -3).
For the three-round event, the Chants as a team led the tournament field in par-3 scoring (3.08, +5), ranked second in par-4 scoring (4.12, +19) and third in par-5 scoring (4.64, -16).
Coastal was also second overall among the team leaders in birdies (50), fourth in pars (163) and sixth in eagles (1) over the 54-holes of play.
The 54-hole team score of 845, -7 under par, is tied for the third-lowest 54-hole team score in Chants history, while the tournament win is the first for Coastal since winning the stroke play portion of the 2018 Sun Belt Championship last May with a 54-hole score of 845, -7 under par.
"What a big-time finish today for the guys. We got off to a slow start and a couple of teams even passed us," stated head coach Jim Garren. "What a great round by Zach and another great week overall for him. I hate if for Wes. He didn't have his best stuff and was tied for the lead going to the last hole. The winner made a birdie to beat him, but it was still a great week for Wes. We needed a big week this week and we got it. I'm proud of the effort this week. The guys wanted to win and got the job done. We are excited to be bringing a trophy back to the beach. Chants Up!"
Leading the Chants over the weekend with a runner-up finish was Artac with his 54-hole score of 206, -7 under par. The senior carded rounds of 69, 64 and 73 over the three days of play, totaling a team-high 14 birdies and 33 pars over his 54 holes. His score of 206 on the weekend is his lowest 54-hole tournament score as a Chant and is the second-lowest for the team this season behind Zack Taylor's 205 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in October.
Taylor finished his three days of play with a final round 68, -3 under par, on Sunday to place in a tie for third overall with his 54-hole score of 208, -5, under par. The junior turned in a team-high 35 pars and 12 birdies over his rounds of 69, 71 and 68.
Artac and Taylor's 54-hole tournament scores of 206 and 208 are tied for the 12th and 18th-best 54-hole tournament scores in CCU history, respectively, while Artac's second-round 64 is tied for the third-lowest 18-hole round in Coastal's men's golf record books.
Also posting a top 20 finish for the Chants was freshman Brady Hinkle with his three-round score of 216, +3. The first-year Chant shot a final round 71, even par, after posting rounds of 74 and 71 over the first two days of play. The lone Chanticleer to post an eagle for the tournament, Hinkle also tallied nine birdies and 31 pars over his 54-holes of play.
Seniors Daniel Overas and Morgan Deneen rounded out the Chants' lineup. Overas carded rounds of 71, 73 and 77 to finish in a tie for 46th overall with his score of 221, +8, while Deneen saved his best round for last with a final round of 72, +1, to end the tournament with a 54-hole score of 222, +9 (73-77-72). Overas and Deneen each recorded 32 pars apiece, while Overas tallied eight birdies to Deneen's seven.
Furman (853, +1), Virginia Tech (857, +5) and Minnesota (860, +8) rounded out the top five in the 21-team field.
With their first-place finish and Georgia State's 14th-place showing, the Chanticleers have now won 22-straight head-to-head matchups over Sun Belt foes.
The Chants will be back in action in one week, as Coastal will head south to play in the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on March 31 and April 1 at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
