Coastal Carolina men’s golf is ahead of six nationally ranked top-50 teams after day one
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – Coastal Carolina men's golf carded rounds of 293 and 286 on Sunday to end day one of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in a tie for third-place overall with a 36-hole team score of 579, +3.
The Chants are tied with host and No. 17-nationally ranked North Florida for third-place overall with a two-round combined team score of 579, +3. Coastal is just three strokes back of both No. 22 Louisville and No. 29 North Carolina who are tied atop of the team leaderboard with day one scores of 576, even par.
Coastal is in front of No. 30 NC State (580, +4), No. 19 Clemson (580, +4), No. 43 Tennessee (581, +5), No. 21 Alabama (589, +13), No. 9 Auburn (592, +16), No. 37 TCU (592, +16) and five other teams.
"We had a really good day today and the guys fought hard all day long. This is an elite field and we held our own against them all as we are just three back heading into the final round," head coach Jim Garren stated. "The weather is going to be crazy tomorrow and there are a lot of teams in the hunt, so it is going to be a fight out there."
CCU's Zack Taylor continued his strong play on Sunday, as the junior posted rounds of 74 and 67 to finish day one in a tie for sixth overall with his 36-hole score of 141, -3 under par. Taylor totaled nine birdies, 22 pars and a par-3 scoring average of 3.00, even par, on the day.
A trio of Chant golfers in Wes Artac, Luis Ruiz and States Fort all finished the day in a tie for 21st overall with identical 36-hole scores of 146, +2.
Artac posted rounds of 74 and 72, which included an eagle, five birdies and 22 pars on the day. Ruiz followed his first round 75 with a second round 71, -1 under par, to climb up into the top-25, while Fort shot a CCU low round 70, -2 under par, in the morning session before posting a second round 76 on a windy afternoon.
Rounding out the lineup for the Chants was freshman Brady Hinkle. Hinkle tallied rounds of 84 and 75 to finish day one with a 36-hole score of 160, +16.
Playing as an individual, first-year Chant Connor Newton recorded rounds of 77 and 76 to end day one in a tie for 62nd overall with his two-round combined score of 153, +9.
The third and final round of the tournament will take place on Monday, April 1. The Chants are scheduled to tee-off at 8:25 a.m. ET, however, inclement weather is forecasted throughout the day.
