Chants' Golf Ready for The Hayt at Sawgrass CC

Conway, S.C. – After posting its first team win last weekend at the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate, the Coastal men's golf team will head south to compete John Hayt Collegiate Invitational hosted by North Florida University at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. on March 31-April 1.
The two-day, 54-hole event will play a par-72, 6,966-yards at the Sawgrass Country Club golf course. Day one of play on Sunday will consist of 36-holes of continuous play, while the third and final round will be 18 holes of play on Monday, April 1.
The tournament field includes Coastal, host No. 17 North Florida, No. 19 Clemson, No. 21 Alabama, No. 22 Louisville, No. 29 North Carolina, No. 30 NC State, No. 37 TCU, No. 43 Tennessee, UAB, Purdue, Jacksonville, Charlotte and North Texas.
"We are looking forward to getting to Sawgrass and competing against some of the best teams in the country in one of the best events in the country," commented head men's golf coach Jim Garren. "Coming off a win, the guys are hungry to get back at it. There could be some drastically different weather conditions from day one to day two and those are the types of challenges we like facing head-on."
The Chanticleers will send out the lineup of No. 1 Zack Taylor, No. 2 Wes Artac, No. 3 Luis Ruiz, No. 4 States Fort and No. 5 Brady Hinkle this weekend.
Taylor will once again play in the No. 1 spot for the Chants this weekend after posting a top-five finish last weekend at the Furman Intercollegiate with his three-round combined score of 208, -5 under par. The junior posted three rounds of par or better over his 54-holes of play, including two rounds in the 60s. On the year, Taylor has totaled a team-high seven rounds in the 60s and has shot par or better in six of his nine rounds of play this spring season.
Artac is coming off his best event as a Chanticleer, as the senior transfer posted a runner-up finish with his 54-hole score of 206, -7 under par, at the Furman Intercollegiate. The Texas native has six rounds in the 60s on the year and is second on the team with two top-five finishes overall, which were both runner-up finishes.
Returning to the lineup this weekend is both Ruiz and Fort. Ruiz has played in six events this season and posted a 74.56 scoring average of 18 rounds of play on the year, while Fort has teed off for the Chants in seven tournaments this year and recorded a stroke average of 74.76 over 21 rounds of golf.
The two upperclassmen last competed for CCU at the General Hackler Championship on March 11-12 with Fort carding a 54-hole score of 227, +11, and Ruiz posting a score of 235, +19, over the three rounds of play.
Following his best 54-hole performance as a Chant to date, Hinkle returns to the lineup for the second-straight week this weekend at The Hayt. The freshman golfer posted rounds of 74, 71 and 71 last time out at the Furman Intercollegiate to place in a tie for 17th overall with a 54-hole score of 216, +3. Hinkle as carded four rounds of par or better over his six rounds of play this spring.
Freshman Connor Newton will also compete as an individual. The first-year Chant is playing in his third event this season having competed in both the Tucker Intercollegiate in New Mexico in the fall and the General Hackler Championship three weeks ago in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Newton has posted a low round 71 this season and is coming off a 54-hole score of 222, +6, at the Hackler Championship.
