CONWAY - Coastal Carolina (23-9, 4-5 SBC) dropped the third and final game of the three game set to the Troy Trojans (21-13, 5-4 SBC) on Sunday by the score of 5-3. After late inning rally by Coastal to tie the game, the Trojans Kelly Horne hit her second of the season to give her team the victory.
CCU fell behind 2-0 after the first inning, but were able to pick up their first run of the game in the third as
Taylor Sweigart led off with a single and then stole second base. Two batters later,
Courtney Dean connected with her first hit of the day, knocking in Sweigart from second base for her 27
th RBI on the year.
In the fifth with the score 2-1, Troy extended the lead when Madeline Porter hit an RBI single to center field off Coastal starter
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko.
The Chants tied it in the bottom of the fifth as ninth batter
Alexis Alvino picked up her only hit of the day with a single into left field. The next batter Sweigart, connected for her sixth big fly of the season, to tie the score at three runs apiece.
Kaylee Hussey led off the sixth with a double into left center and after a steal by pinch runner Grace Mirly, the seventh-place hitter Horne took the 1-2 pitch from Beasley-Polko over the left field fence to give the lead back to the Trojans, 5-3.
Coastal threatened off Troy reliever Claire Graves in the bottom of the seventh as Dean picked up her second hit of the day with a two out double and then the Graves plunked sophomore
Stavi Augur. Graves settled down to get freshman
Abbey Montoya to groundout for the final out of the game to earn her first save of the season.
Troy starter, Leanna Johnson went the first 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits, but it was Kynsley Rae Blasingame that picked up the win as she pitched one third of an inning. The sophomore in her appearance gave up no earned runs, but did allow the aforementioned fifth inning homer to Sweigart.
The Chanticleers return to action on Wednesday as they host former Big South rival, Winthrop. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
