Coastal Defeats UNCW, Falls to #10 South Carolina

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the CCU Beach Volleyball Complex, falling 5-0 to nationally ranked #10 South Carolina before defeating UNCW, 3-2, to close out the Chants' first home event of the season.

Saturday's action moves Coastal to 7-3 overall as the Chants continue to improve upon their best season start in program history.

Next up, the Chants play a single match at current #6 LSU on Friday before playing a pair of matches on Saturday against Tulane and New Orleans as part of the Green Wave Invitational.

Match 1: #10 South Carolina 5 – Coastal 0
Coastal faced tough competition against the nationally ranked Gamecocks to open the day's action. South Carolina swept the Chants all five courts.

Lydia Dimke and Katie Smith struck first against Shelby Ladewig and Aleksandra Djuric at No. 2. Coastal's fourth pairing of Kate Federico and Tanner Gauthier then suffered a loss to Jess Vastine and Hannah Edelman. The match-winning point was provided by Franky Harrison and Carly Schneider over Lucy Campbell and Anaiah Boyer at No. 3.

Anett Nemeth and Kaylin Eske fell at No. 5, and Leah Hardeman and Sydney Alvis were defeated at No. 1 to close out the match.

Match 2: Coastal 3 – UNCW 2
The Chants were not deterred by their earlier loss as they finished the day on a high note with a 3-2 win over the Seahawks.

UNCW took the match's lead as Raquel Rooney and Brynn Montgomery won the No. 2 match against Ladewig and Djuric.

Federico and Gauthier evened the match with a three-set win at No. 4, and Coastal went up 2-1 in the match when Nemeth and Eske swept Reagan Evans and JM Lewandowski at No. 5.

Alvis and Hardeman provided the match-winning point for the Chants on the first court, winning a straight-sets match over Maddy Kline and Jaime Thomas, 21-15, 21-19.

UNCW captured the match's final point at No. 3.
