CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina softball team (30-12, 10-6 Sun Belt) scored six runs in the final two innings to pick up a come from behind win on Saturday afternoon and defeat the Texas State Bobcats (22-18, 10-7 Sun Belt) by the score of 7-4 at St. John's Stadium.
Texas State was the first team to score in the game as they loaded the bases on two hits and a walk in the top of the second off Chanticleer starter
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko. Kennedy Cline added her 14th run batted in of the year with a walk and then Mari Cranek forced in AriAnn Bell for the second run of the inning as she grounded out to Chanticleer shortstop
Alexis Alvino to put the visitors up 2-0.
Freshman
Mackenzie Beyer connected on her second home run in as many days as she hit a solo shot off Bobcat starter Dalilah Barrera in the bottom of the third to cut into the Bobcat lead.
The Chants got two key two-out hits in the bottom of the fifth from sophomore
Stavi Augur and freshman
Abbey Montoya.
Augur had her only hit of the game in the fifth as she brought around sophomore
Taylor Sweigart to score and tied it at two all. The next batter Montoya, who hit the ball hard in each of her previous two at-bats but had nothing to show for it, saw the third time as the charm as the freshman was able to unload a 2-2 Barrera pitch into the left-field bullpen for her seventh home run of the season and give CCU a 5-3 lead.
In the sixth with the score 5-3, the Chanticleers added a couple of insurance runs for Beasley-Polko. The Cranston, R.I. native, Beyer, roped a two-out double, just past the outstretched glove of Bobcat third baseman Haliegh McKay. Sweigart then extended the lead to 7-3 as she came up with her third and final hit of the day on her sixth long ball of the year.
Texas State competed until the final out in the seventh. Kennedy Cline led off with a single into right center. Beasley-Polko would get the next batter Mari Cranek to pop-out to third base, but then allowed back-to-back doubles to Christiana McDowell and Bailee Carter. The Bobcats would add a run in the final frame but the Leonardtown, Md. native forced a pop-up and a fly out to end the game.
With the complete game win, Beasley-Polko improved to 20-7 on year as she becomes the first Chanticleer since Kiana Quolas (26-5) in 2014 to achieve the 20-win mark.
Barrera dropped to 6-4 on the season as she allowed five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings.
