Chants Jump Back into Sun Belt Play this Weekend at Georgia State

Conway, S.C. – Coastal Carolina baseball returns to Sun Belt Conference play this weekend, as the Chanticleers hit the road for a three-game set at Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga.

Charting the Chants
  • The Chanticleers are 24-17-1 overall this season and 9-8 in Sun Belt Conference play entering the three-game road series at Georgia State this weekend.
  • CCU has gone just 3-7 over its last 10 games and 4-9 overall for the month of April.
  • The Chants limp into play this weekend having gone 1-6 over their last seven games, which includes a four-game losing streak, their longest since the 2014 season, and have dropped each of their last two contests.
  • Coastal is just 7-9 in true road games this season, however, five of those seven road wins have come in Sun Belt Conference play versus ULM and South Alabama.
 
Peering at the Panthers
  • Georgia State enters play this weekend at 12-30 overall and 3-16 in the Sun Belt.
  • The Panthers, who have played five-straight on the road over the last two weeks, are 8-17 overall at home this season.
  • GSU has each of its last five games, including a three-game series sweep at South Alabama (April 19-20), and has gone 3-7 over its last 10 games.
  • In Sun Belt play, the Panthers have opened up with a 2-1 conference series win on the road at Appalachian State (March 15-17), but have gone just 1-15 since and have been swept in four different conference series (vs. UTA, March 22-24; at Little Rock, March 29-31; vs. ULM, April 5-7; and at South Alabama, April 19-20).
 
All-Time Series History
  • Coastal leads the all-time series 5-1 over Georgia State with all six meetings coming in Sun Belt Conference play over the last two years.
  • The Chants swept the Panthers 3-0 at the GSU Baseball Complex in 2017, capping off the series with a 17-0, seven-inning win in the finale.
  • Last season, Georgia State took the series opener at 3-2 over the Chants before Coastal outscored the Panthers 10-4 over the next two games to take the series 2-1 at Springs Brooks Stadium.
 
Chants Chatter
  • Coastal as a team leads the Sun Belt in a number of categories this season. The Chants rank first in the league in batting average (.294), hits (431), doubles (84), home runs (52), runs scored (311), scoring (7.4), on-base percentage (.401), slugging percentage (.477) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.1).
  • Coastal Carolina has won each of the last two games in the all-time series with the Georgia State Panthers and has won both Sun Belt Conference series between the two teams over the last two years.
  • Coastal has three different players that lead the Sun Belt in one offensive statistical category heading into play this week. Kieton Rivers leads the league in RBIs with 46 on the season, while Jake Wright is first in the Sun Belt with a .486 on-base percentage for the year. Cory Wood leads the Sun Belt in walks with 38.
  • The Sun Belt Conference road series at Georgia State this weekend is the fourth conference series for the Chants this season. Coastal is 2-1 over its three conference road series thus far this season with a three-game sweep at ULM (March 15-17) and 2-1 series victory at South Alabama (April 6-7) before suffering a 2-0 series loss in a rain-shortened series at Little Rock (April 12).
  • The Chants have players with five home runs or more on the season in Parker Chavers (10), Zach Biermann (9), Kieton Rivers (8), Kyle Skeels (8) and Jake Wright (5) which is a combined 40 home runs overall. Georgia State has just 15 home runs on the season as a team.
  • The magic number for CCU this season is six - as in six runs. Coastal is 22-4 overall on the year when scoring six runs or more in a game and just 2-13-1 when scoring less than six runs. When holding its opponents to six runs or less, the Chants are 16-4-1, yet are only 8-13 when allowing six runs or more.
  • Coastal's Anthony Veneziano (4-1) has made seven starts on the mound this season and will make his eighth start of the year on Friday. Seven other Chants have combined to make 35 starts on the hill this season in Zach McCambley (9), Austin Kitchen (9), Garrett McDaniels (7), Nick Parker (5), Scott Kobos (3), Matt Eardensohn (1) and Bobby Holmes (1).
  • The Chanticleers are almost unbeatable when leading after eight innings of play. This season, Coastal is 20-0-1 when leading after eight innings of play and 2-1 when entering the ninth inning tied. However, CCU is just 2-15 overall on the year when trailing after eight innings.
  • This season, the Chants are averaging 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings this season. A total of 10 different pitchers have fanned more batters than then innings pitched on the year, while the Chants also lead the Sun Belt in batters struck out with 381 overall on the season.
  • In their 24 wins this season, the Chanticleers are averaging just shy of 10 runs per game at 9.8 per contest. However, in their 17 losses, Coastal is scoring on average just 4.2 runs per game.

  • Coastal will return home next weekend to host the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in a three-game Sun Belt weekend series on May 3-5.
