Chanticleers and No. 8 Louisiana To Battle In Weekend Series

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina softball team will travel to Lafayette, La., this weekend for their final road trip of the 2019 regular season as they take on the No. 8 ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at Lamson Park.

Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers go into the series 11-10 and sit in fifth place in the Sun Belt Conference after they dropped three straight on the road to the UT Arlington Mavericks.

Coastal snapped a three-game losing streak on Tuesday as they picked up a 1-0 win at the College of Charleston Cougars to improve to 33-15 on the season.

The Chanticleers tallied seven hits on the day led by Stavi Augur's team-high three hits. The sophomore collected a double and two singles.

The only score of the game occurred in the top of the fourth as freshman Sydney Guess gave Coastal Carolina a 1-0 lead as she picked up her 13th run batted in of the year with a single into left field.

Kassidy Smith came around to score on the Guess single. The junior started the Coastal rally as she led off the fourth by reaching base with her Sun Belt leading 18th hit-by-pitch of the year.

Senior Ashley Guillette started in the circle for CCU and improved to 12-5 on the year with the win. The Oxford, Ct., native pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless softball and gave up just two hits.

Sophomore Kaitlin Beasley-Polko relieved Guillette in the fifth inning and closed out the game as she got the final eight outs for her conference-leading fifth save of the season.

In her career, Beasley-Polko now sits behind Guillette and Michelle Hall (1990-93) with seven saves. Both Guillette and Hall have 10 in their respective careers.

With one more appearance, the veteran Guillette will move into a tie for third place all-time with Ashley Frederick (2007-10) at 132 career appearances.

Louisiana
The Ragin' Cajuns enter this weekend's series as already holding this season's conference regular season championship with a record of 21-0. Louisiana laid claim to their fifth Sun Belt Championship in the last seven years as they swept the Georgia State Panthers in last weekend's home series.

Junior pitcher Summer Ellyson won Sun Belt pitcher of the week on Tuesday as she went 4-0 with a 0.78 earned-run average and collected 38 strikeouts in 18 innings over four starts against UNCG (1) and Georgia State (3).

Ellyson averaged over two strikeouts per inning over her four starts. Ellyson tallied at least seven strikeouts each time out and reached double digits twice. Both of her double-digit strikeout totals came in only five innings of work, 12 at UNC Greensboro and 11 in Game 1 of the Georgia State series.

On Wednesday night, Louisiana won their 20th consecutive game and improved to 43-4 with a 7-2 road win at Louisiana Tech.

Catcher Julie Rawls had a game-high three RBI in the win. Rawls had a sacrifice fly in the third inning, and then the junior put the game out of reach with a two-run single in the fourth inning.

Over her last seven games, Rawls has a batting average of .381 (8 for 21) with 13 RBI.

Rawls is one of the leaders of the LA line up in 2019. Louisiana ranks as the top hitting team in the conference at a mark of .345. Rawls herself has a Sun Belt-best .726 slugging percentage, a .524 on-base percentage, and 45 runs batted in.

Ellyson, as mentioned above, guides a Ragin' Cajun pitching staff that has a Sun Belt-best team earned run average of 1.50. Individually, the junior is tops in four Sun Belt pitching categories including; wins (30), innings pitched (200.0), strikeouts (256), earned run average (1.12).

History
Louisiana holds a 5-1 all-time mark against Coastal Carolina. CCU picked up their only win of the series thus far on March 10, 2018, as they defeated the Cajuns by the score of 4-2. That victory was the first victory a Chanticleer team has earned versus a top 25 opponent since Mach 4, 2004 against Oregon.
