Chants Chatter

Coastal Carolina leads the Sun Belt in a number of statistical categories including batting average (.300), doubles (59), hit-by-pitch (58), hits (325), home runs (33), on-base percentage (.416), runs scored (242), scoring (7.8 runs per game) and slugging percentage (.463), as well as on the mound in strikeouts per nine innings (9.1) and overall wins (20).
Coastal had not one, but two players receive national recognition for their play thus far this season in Kyle Skeels and Kieton Rivers. Skeels was named to the 2019 Buster Posey Award watch list, an award given to the top collegiate catcher in all of NCAA Division I baseball. Rivers was named to the Midseason Perfect Game/Rawlings All-America Second Team for his strong play over the first half of the season.
This Chants enter play this weekend at South Alabama on a three-game losing streak, their longest of the season. In fact, Coastal has had just not lost more than three games in a row since a nine-game skid back in 2014. CCU has had just five three-game losing streaks dating back to 2015 prior to the current drought.
Coastal has scored four runs or more in a single inning a total of 17 times this season, including posting a season-high six runs in one inning three times. The Chants are 12-1-1 this season in games which they post a "big inning", while only allowing eight "big innings" to their opponents.
Coastal has recorded a total of five, five-plus RBI games this season by four different players. Jake Wright has driven five or more RBIs twice this season, both of which came in wins at ULM, while Kieton Rivers, Parker Chavers, and Kyle Skeels have all registered five RBIs or more in a game this season.
The Chants are averaging almost six more runs a game in their wins than in their losses this season. In their 20 wins this year, Coastal has scored 197 runs, an average of 9.9 runs per contest. In the 10 losses, CCU has totaled just 41 runs, an average of 4.1 runs per outing. That's a difference of 5.8 runs per game.
Coastal is 17-1-1 then season when leading after seven innings of play. However, the Chants are only 1-7 when trailing entering the eighth inning and are 2-2 when tied after the seventh-inning stretch.
The Coastal offense has eight players hitting over .300 on the season led by senior Kieton Rivers at .375. Scott McKeon (.371), Jake Wright (.353), Cameron Pearcey (.339) and Kyle Skeels (.330) are all hitting over .330 on the year entering play this weekend versus the Jaguars. Jared Johnson (.306), Parker Chavers (.304) and Cory Wood (.301) are also hitting over .300 on the season.
This season, the Chants are averaging 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings this season. A total of nine different pitchers have fanned more batters than then innings pitched on the year.
Coastal Carolina's pitching staff has struck out double-digit hitters in 15 different games this season, including a season-high 14 punch-outs versus Troy (March 22) and 13 Ks in back-to-back wins over Indiana (March 3) and Wake Forest (March 5).
