MOBILE, ALA. - Junior first baseman
Kassidy Smith picked up four hits on the day to lead Coastal Carolina (28-10, 8-6 Sun Belt ) past South Alabama Jaguars (12-23, 2-12 Sun Belt) with a picked up a pair of wins in the Saturday doubleheader.
Game 1
In the bottom of the second with two runners on, Amanda Flynn grounded out on fielder's choice to Coastal second baseman
Taylor Sweigart allowing pinch runner Carolina Nichols to move up to third. Nichols later scored on a wild pitch by Chanticleer starter
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko to take a 1-0 lead.
Coastal came back to tie it in the top of the third as the first two Chanticleer hitters got on base with a walk. Reigning player of the week in the Sun Belt Conference, Smith, tied the game with her seventh double of the season and her 22
nd run batted in on the year.
In the bottom of the third, the Jags' Brittany Reid connected with her sixth home run of the season that allowed South Alabama to retake the lead in the game, 2-1.
Coastal took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth after a hit by pitch to
Mackenzie Beyer and Smith's second hit of the game allowed sophomore center fielder
Courtney Dean to hit her 12
th and conference-leading home run of the season.
South Alabama had a chance in the bottom of the fifth to cut in to the Coastal two run lead. Katelyn Gruich singled but Coastal freshman left fielder
Sydney Guess came made a tremendous throw to gun down the lead runner Victoria Ortiz at home plate to end the rally.
In the seventh, Coastal clinged to a 4-3 lead as the Jaguars got hits from Reid and Ortiz to start the inning. Chanticleer Head Coach
Kelley Green replaced Beasley-Polko with senior
Ashley Guillette. The senior ended the USA rally getting the final two outs of the game.
Beasley-Polko improved to 18-6 on the season as she went 6.1 innings, allowed three hits on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Smith led the Chants at the plate as the junior first baseman went 2-for-4 with the aformentioned double that led to her only RBI of the day.
Game 2
With one out in the top of the first Smith hit her tenth home run of the season to put the Chanticleers up early.
South Alabama picked up their first hit of game off the starter Guillette as Kamdyn Kvistad hit a solo homer and her fifth of the season to tie the score at one run apiece.
In the bottom of the fifth USA took the lead as Reid walked and then stole second base with one out. Reid came around to score on a Kennedy Cronan single.
The Chanticleer team came right back in the top of the sixth as
Mackenzie Beyer walked and then Smith was able to hit her second long ball of the game to give her team a 3-2 lead.
CCU added a run an insurance run in the seventh inning that helped Beasley-Polko to a two inning save for her conference-leading fourth save of the year.
Guillette earned her tenth win of the season and 48
th of her career (fifth all-time in school history). The righty pitched five innings, allowed three hits and two runs on eight strikeouts.
With Smith's pair of homers, the junior is the tenth person ever to hit a pair of dingers in the same game versus South Alabama pitching. The last to do it was Courtney
Dean who did it last season at St. John Stadium on April 28 in a 10-4 loss.
The Chanticleers will wrap up the series on Sunday as they try to sweep the Jaguars at 1:00 p.m.
