MOBILE, ALA. – Coastal Carolina improved to 29-10 overall and 9-6 in the Sun Belt as they completed their third conference sweep of 2019 as they defeated the South Alabama Jaguars on Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field. Sophomore
Stavi Augur had the biggest hit of the game, a grand slam home run and sixth of the season to help CCU past the Jags, 6-4.
Freshman
Abbey Montoya added her 12
th RBI of the season with a single off South Alabama starter Samantha Yarborough in the first inning bringing in
Taylor Sweigart.
The Jaguars tied it in the bottom of the second off Chanticleer starter
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko when Katelyn Gruich started the rally with a walk, followed by three straight singles by Victoria Ortiz, Lyric Cabral, and Samantha Mayo's line drive to centerfield to bring around pinch runner Caroline Nichols.
A pair of doubles by sophomores
Courtney Dean and Augur started the top of the third for the Chanticleers and with two outs senior
Natalie David got her first hit of the season with a hard ground ball back up the middle to bring around Dean to help CCU retake the lead, 2-1.
In the top of the sixth,
Mackenzie Beyer singled and then back-to-back walks from Jags reliever Alexis allowed the Chants to break open the game as Augur added her second hit of the game, this time in grand slam fashion to extend the lead to 6-1.
South Alabama would not go away as USA cut it to a two-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth as Katelyn Gruich and Victoria Ortiz reached base to set up the first career home run of Lyric Cabral.
Brittani Reid led off with a hit by pitch in the bottom of the seventh but Beasley-Polko retired the next three batters to end the game and improve to 19-6 on the season. The sophomore pitched her 14
th complete game of the season allowing five hits, four runs with eight strikeouts.
Augur, David, and Beyer each had two hits for Coastal Carolina. David (1), Montoya (4), and David (1) accounted for all the Chanticleers RBI on the day.
Cabral went 2-for-3 on the day and had three runs batted in for South Alabama.
Coastal Carolina returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to Chapel Hill to face their third ACC school of the season, North Carolina for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch against the Tar Heels. This season, Coastal is 3-0 against ACC schools, picking up two wins against Pittsburgh and one against Duke.
