Chants Compete at the Seahawk Fall Invitational

Coastal Carolina men’s tennis Gonzalo Achondo picked up a flight title in Wilmington

Wilmington, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team completed the weekend at the Seahawk Fall Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. going 4-4 in doubles action and 13-8 overall in the singles events. The event had teams from Florida, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Gwinnett, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville, North Florida, Virginia Commonwealth, Coastal, and host UNCW.
 
CCU had an opportunity for a title in the C doubles flight and was guaranteed a title in the B flight of singles.
 
The Chants' Gonzalo Achondo/Francesco Cori finished second in the C doubles flight falling 6-1 to the Seahawks Michael Morphy/Dillon Gooch. Before getting to the finals, Achondo/Cori, the top seed in the flight, opened with a bye then defeated the UNCW duo of Davide Innocenti/Griff Babineaux.
 
In other doubles action, Coastal's Zak Talic/Popov teamed together in the doubles A flight to go 2-1. Talic/Popov fell 6-3 in the opening round to Florida's Brian Berdusco/Josh Goodger. The Chant tandem followed with back-to-back wins over UNCW's Bruno Caula/Cole Groetsch (6-2) and VCU's Inigo Torre Martin/Daniel Khin (6-3).
 
In the doubles B flight, CCU's Pyry Hyrkkonen/Daiki Tanabe would go 1-2 sandwiching a 6-3 win over GWU's Plentz/Enslin between a 6-4 loss to the Ram's Zgraggen/Stable and a 7-6 (1) to the Gators' twin brother duo of Harrison and Greysen Cacciatore.
 
Coastal's Achondo claimed the title in the singles B flight by going 4-0 and claiming victories over the fourth seed Michael Copeland of UNCW (6-2, 6-3) and the top seed Jose Dugo of Georgia Gwinnett (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) before getting a 6-2, 6-2 win over fellow Chant and classmate Joel Popov. Popov fared well going 3-1 with victories over Innocenti (6-4, 6-3), Charlie Morkel of UNCA (6-1, 6-3), and the Ospreys' Jorge Nunez by default.
 
The Chanticleers' Hyrkkonen and Tanabe combined to go 3-3 in the singles C flight along with two of the three byes. Hyrkkonen opened the tournament with a bye before falling to the eventual flight winner Seahawks' Gooch (7-5, 6-2) and rebounded to beat Ross Gilbert of Gardner-Webb 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (4).
