Men’s Golf Heads West for William H. Tucker Intercollegiate

Conway, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team returns to competition this weekend at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by the University of New Mexico at the 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. on Sept. 27-28.
At last year's Tucker Intercollegiate event, the Chanticleers finished ninth out of the 17-team field and will look to build on that finish this year against another strong field that includes host New Mexico, No. 42 Coastal Carolina, UNLV, No. 4 Arizona, BYU, San Diego State, No. 29 Utah, No. 26 Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, North Texas, Florida Atlantic, UTEP, New Mexico State and Loyola Marymount (Golfweek rankings).
"We are excited to be returning to Albuquerque for the second year in a row. The Tucker Intercollegiate is one of the oldest and most tradition-rich events in all of college golf and it's an honor to get to compete in it again," stated head coach Jim Garren. "This is going to be a tough test for us. The field is very strong from top to bottom and a lot of the teams are used to playing in the conditions out there that is completely foreign to our guys. Playing at elevation, in wide-open spaces, and on different grasses is not an easy adjustment for southern teams but it's the reason we go out there to play. A great golf course against a stout field will show us how we stack up early in the year. We are looking forward to it."
For the second event of the fall season, the Chanticleers will send out a lineup of Zack Taylor, Seth Taylor, Connor Newton, States Fort, and Gavin Noble, while Garrett Cooper will play compete as an individual.
Zack Taylor is coming off a top-15 finish in the season-opening event three weeks ago at the 2019 Badger Invitational as he carded a 54-hole score of 213, -3 under par, to finish in a tie for 13th-place overall to finish as the top Chant.
Freshman Seth Taylor closed out his first intercollegiate tournament with a final round 68, -4 under par, to finish in a tie for 21st-place overall at the Badger Invitational with a final score of 216, even par.
Coastal Carolina's Newton and Fort will both return to the lineup this week after competing at the Badger Invitational to open the season. Newton finished in a tie for 36th overall with his 54-hole tournament score of 220, +4, while Fort finished in in the top-25 with a score of 217, +1, overall.
Breaking into the lineup this weekend is Noble, as he along with CCU's individual in Cooper, will be making their intercollegiate debuts this weekend at the Tucker Intercollegiate.
Noble was four-time state qualifier in the state of Georgia and was ranked No. 1 in the state of Georgia and as high as No. 21 nationally by Golfweek over his senior season. He was also ranked as high as No. 2 in Georgia by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and as high as 31st nationally by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).
Cooper was ranked as high as the No. 8 player in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association (SCJGA) rankings, where he was a two-time all-state and all-county performer at Chesnee High School.
