Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Zak Talic of the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team won the title to flight one at the CofC Tennis Complex at Patriots Point on Sunday. Coastal finished with an overall record of 23-7 for the weekend against host CofC, Wofford (Friday), and Sun Belt foe Appalachian State (Saturday) in the Charleston Invitational.
 
"The guys did an excellent job all weekend. The hard work in practice paid off in the heat against quality competition," said head coach Chris Powers. "We could be headed for a successful year if we continue to improve at this pace. It is impressive to see these guys perform like the juniors and seniors that they are."
 
Talic continued with his hot streak in the three-day event by going undefeated in singles action and 2-1 in doubles play. The senior from Brisbane, Australia finished his weekend getting the flight one title with a straight-set win over the Cougars' Ksawery Pociej.
 
At the No. 4, 6, and 7 positions, the Chanticleers picked up straight-set victories from Joel Popov, Francesco Cori, and Juan Castellanos while Gonzalo Achondo needed three sets to win his match.
 
Despite dropping the matches at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, Coastal battled to the end with Pyry Hyrkkonen falling to Karl Mosterd of CofC in three sets and Daiki Tanabe pushing College of Charleston's Noah Borges to tiebreaks in both sets.
 
In doubles action, Achondo and Hyrkkonen controlled the match for a 6-1 victory over Mosterd and Borges at the No. 2 position while at the No. 3 Castellanos and Tanabe got the victory over Robby Krick and Johnny Wang 6-4.
 
The Chanticleers will return to action as they will host South Carolina State on Oct. 11 at the Steven Tennis Complex with the starting time to be announced.
