Game Notes
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's basketball team will host Louisiana Monroe Monday, January 6 at 7 p.m. The game is the final contest of a three-game conference home-stand, and is also CCU's third game in five days.
Â
Both teams enter the game with identical 2-2 records in conference play, with ULM winners of two straight, but this game will also showcase two conference leaders.
Â
CCU is the team's top scoring team at 80.5 points per game, and the Warhawks enter the game allowing a conference-best 62.8 points per game while only allowing the opposition a .409 shooting percentage and an even better .305 percentage on the opponents three-point tries.
Â
While the Chants have not played their best in the last two games, they have done enough to split the two games. In CCU's 74-72 win over Georgia State
DeVante' Jones led the way with 23 points and is now the team's scoring leader at 15.5 points per game. He is also the conference's leader in assists with 80 on the season.
Â
Keishawn Brewton made his fourth start of the season a solid one by scoring 14 points, but it was his defense that earned the coaches praise following the game. He drew the assignment of guarding the Panthers' leading scorer Corey Allen. Brewton's defensive effort held Allen four points below his average and while Allen finished with 12 points, it took 14 shots to get those points.
Â
Tyrell Gumbs-Frater has had a couple of rough scoring outings, but is still averaging over 12 points per game and continues to lead the conference in three-point shooting.
Â
There has not been a lot said about the play of senior
Tommy Burton, but he picked up his third double-double of the season against Georgia State and is averaging 10.9 points and seven rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent from the field.
Â
The Chants are going to face a hot ULM squad that is coming off two consecutive conference wins and is led by what may be the hottest shooting player in the conference.
Â
Junior guard Michael Ertel is coming off a 39-point effort in leading ULM to a win over South Alabama. He hit 11 three-pointers in the game and is the conference's fourth-leading scorer averaging over 17 points per outing.
Â
The Warhawks have one other player reaching double-digit scoring in JD Williams at 15.1 points per game.
