Men's Soccer to face Old Foe in Sun Belt Championship Match

ATLANTA – Coastal Carolina University will face a familiar foe in the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 15 in Atlanta, Ga.

The 1 p.m. ET showdown will pit the Chanticleers against the Panthers of Georgia State for the Sun Belt Tournament crown as the two teams will meet each other for the fourth time in five years in the Sun Belt finals.

Since CCU joined the Sun Belt in 2016 the Chants have met Georgia State in all five of the Sun Belt Conference tournaments with three of those being the title game. CCU has won the three previous title games including last season's thrilling 6-5 win on penalty kicks after regulation and two overtime periods could not decide the outcome.

CCU (6-1) enters the championship match coming off the heels of one of its top scoring matches not only of the season, but in recent history. The Chants 6-0 shutout of Georgia Southern was the most goals a Chanticleer team had scored since 2012 when CCU recorded an 8-0 road victory over VMI.

Georgia State (9-2-1) played their way into the finals following an advancement after defeating Central Arkansas 4-2 on penalty kicks. It was a match which saw the Panthers score in the final minutes to even the score at one and send the game into extra time.

The two teams first met back in 1978, an 8-0 win by the Panthers in CCU's inaugural season of men's soccer. CCU has rebounded nicely and owns an 11-6-1 overall record against GSU, but the Panthers have won three of the last five matches including CCU's only loss this season, 2-0 in Atlanta back on Nov. 1.

A defender, Marcelo Lage, leads the Chanticleers in scoring with 10 points on five goals after scoring two goals in the Chants' win over Georgia Southern. Teammate Marcello Jones has nine points and a conference-leading five assists, while goalie Tor Saunders has been outstanding in net for CCU and has four shutouts this season.

Georgia State is the league's top offensive team scoring 66 points on 24 goals and 18 assists. Aris Briggs, the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year, leads the Panthers and the Sun Belt in scoring with 13 points on five goals and three assists.

The Panthers also boast the conference's defensive player of the year in George Proctor, who was also named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.

Along with CCU's Saunders, the match arguably will have the top two goalies in the conference face each other as GSU's Paul Tyson enters the match tied for the league-lead in shutouts with Saunders with four and joined Saunders on the All-Sun Belt team.
