McCall, Jackson Named Maxwell and Bednarik Award Semifinalists

CCU is off to a 10-0 start to the 2020 season
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Coastal Carolina redshirt freshman quarterback Grayson McCall and redshirt senior defensive end Tarron Jackson were named semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Award, respectively, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday.
The 84th Maxwell Award will be given to the Collegiate Player of the Year while the 26th Chuck Bednarik Award will recognize the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.
The respective lists include a field of 18 candidates for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards as selected by the Maxwell Football Club National Selection Committee.
McCall, who was also named a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, has completed 127-of-189 pass attempts for 1,832 yards and 20 touchdowns compared to just one interception. He has also rushed 86 times for 433 yards and five scores.
McCall, who has passed from two or more touchdowns in seven games this season, has thrown for over 200 yards in six games this season and has not thrown an interception over his last 131 pass attempts.
The North Carolina native ranks eighth nationally in passing efficiency (182.5), 12th in passing touchdowns (20), 12th in yards per pass attempt (9.69), 13th in points responsible for (152), 15th in passing yards per completion (14.43), 19th in completion percentage (67.2), 21st in points responsible for per game (16.9), and 38th in passing yards (1,832).
Jackson leads the team and ranks second in the Sun Belt with 8.5 sacks and fifth in the league with 12.5 tackles-for-loss this season. He has also totaled 46 tackles, forced three fumbles, which is second in the Sun Belt, and registered a team-high 16 quarterback hurries this year.
A 2021 Reese's Senior Bowl, a three-time Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week award winner, and one-time Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Player of the Week recipient this year, Jackson has also been named to the Ted Hendricks and Lott IMPACT award watch lists, as well as being named to the preseason watch list for the 2020 Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
Last season, the Maxwell Award was presented to LSU quarterback Joe Burrow and the Bednarik Award went to Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. Burrow was selected with the top overall pick in this year's NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and Brown was selected with the No. 2 overall pick by the Washington Football Team.

Semifinalist voting for both of the collegiate awards presented by the Maxwell Football Club will begin on Tuesday, Dec. 8, and will close on Dec. 20. Three finalists for each award will be announced on Dec. 21 and a final round of voting will take place at that time. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA head football coaches, sports information directors, and selected national media.
The winners of the 84th Maxwell Award and the 26th Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast live on ESPN on Jan. 7, 2021.
