CONWAY, S.C. – After posting a pair of wins on Friday at home over Catawba, the Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team split a pair of contests versus UNC Wilmington on Saturday afternoon at the CCU Beach Volleyball Complex in Conway, S.C.
The Seahawks (1-1) won the first match 3-2, only to see the Chanticleers (3-1) return the favor with a 3-2 win in the second match of the day.
Match 1: UNCW 3, Coastal Carolina 2
On the first match of the day, the Chants dropped three of the five bouts to fall to the visiting Seahawks 3-2.
UNCW jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with wins at the No. 4 and 5 flights to open the match.
Coastal earned its first point of the contest with a win on court No. 3, as
Irena Drobnjak and
Carli Ginther handled UNCW's Casey Goodwin and Lexie Hamilton in a 21-9, 21-13 win.
While the duo of
Sydney Alvis and
Viktoria Fink earned a hard-fought three-set win at 10-21, 21-13, 15-11 over Brynn Montgomery and Raquel Rooney at the No. 1 flight, the Seahawks were able to escape with the 3-2 match win with a victory at the No. 2 position.
Match 2: Coastal Carolina 3, UNCW 2
Coastal responded to its first loss of the 2020 season in a big way by bouncing back to defeat the Seahawks 3-2 in match two.
The Sandy Chants opened the contest with a dominating 22-10, 21-11 win by the team of
Kyla Manning and Ginther at the No. 4 position before the Seahawks knotted the match up at 1-1 with a three-set win at No. 5.
The Chants' tandem of
Lucy Campbell and
Martine Kragholm put the home team back in front at 2-1 with a 21-19, 26-24 victory over Goodwin and Hamilton at the No. 3 flight.
Coastal picked up the 3-2 match win when the freshmen duo of Drobnjak and
Sarlota Svobodova dropped the team of JM Lewandowski and Ashley Thompson 21-12, 21-6 at the No. 2 spot.
CCU (3-1) will hit the road for four matches next weekend, Feb. 28-29, at the UAB Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. The Chants will take on Eastern Kentucky (12:30 p.m. ET) and Nicholls State (5 p.m. ET) on Friday and face off with ULM (11:30 a.m. ET) and host UAB (2:30 p.m. ET) on Saturday.
