CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's beach volleyball team will hit the road for the first time in 2020, as the Chanticleers will compete at the Blazer Beach Bash hosted by the University of Alabama-Birmingham this weekend, Feb. 28-29, in Birmingham, Ala.
The Sandy Chants opened the 2020 season last weekend by going 3-1 at home versus Catawba and UNC Wilmington.
Coastal swept the Catawba Indians 5-0, 5-0 in two matches on Friday, Feb. 21, and split a Saturday doubleheader with UNCW by dropping the first match 3-2 and bouncing back to win the second contest 3-2.
Last weekend, the Chants were led by the freshmen duo of
Irena Drobnjak and
Sarlota Svobodova who went 3-0 at the No. 2 spot, posting a victory in each of CCU's three wins.
The pairing of
Kyla Manning and
Carli Ginther also went 3-0 on opening weekend, while the teams of
Viktoria Fink and
Sydney Alvis and
Lucy Campbell and
Martine Kragholm each went 3-1 over the four matches.
This weekend's tournament field includes Coastal (3-1), Eastern Kentucky (0-0), Nicholls State (0-0), ULM (0-5), and host UAB (1-1).
The Chanticleers will open up the tournament versus Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 28, at 12:30 p.m. ET before taking on Nicholls State on Friday evening at 5 p.m. ET.
On day two, CCU will face off with ULM on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. ET and then conclude the two-day event against host UAB at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Coastal Carolina has never faced Eastern Kentucky, Nicholls State, and ULM, and is 0-1 versus UAB all-time having suffered a 5-0 loss to the Blazers in 2016, the first year in the program's history.
