Game Notes
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team will end the regular season Tuesday, March 3, when they face Louisiana at 8 p.m. (ET) in Lafayette, La.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (12-18, 7-12 Sun Belt) own a 4-1 lead in the series, but Tuesday's game will be the first time the two teams have met this season.
Â
There is a lot riding on this game as far as Sun Belt Conference Championship standings. Currently the Chants (15-15, 8-11 Sun Belt) enter the game in eighth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with Louisiana tied for ninth with Arkansas State one game behind CCU.
Â
While there are many scenarios that need to be worked out following the completion of tonight's conference schedule, the Chants do know if they win at Louisiana, they will be back home to host a first round conference championship game Saturday, March 7. If CCU loses, they will continue their current road trip, which could include another game at Louisiana Saturday, March 7.
Â
CCU's win at Appalachian State last Saturday was the Chants first win in Boone in that series. CCU will be looking to turn the same trick by winning their first game in Lafayette in the history of the series.
Â
These two teams mirror each other in the fact they have both gone through season-changing injuries this season. Each team also has a top conference scorer. CCU's
DeVante' Jones is fourth in the conference in scoring (16.7 ppg) and Louisiana's Jalen Johnson is sixth (15.2 ppg).
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns average 71.8 points per game and have a balanced scoring team led by Johnson. Cedric Russell is averaging 13.7 points per game and Mylik Wilson's scoring at an 11.4 clip, and P.J. Hardy's 10.4 points per game.
Â
Johnson leads the team in rebounding averaging 6.6 per game and Wilson's 71 assists are a team-high as are his 60 steals.
Â
The Chants are second in the conference in scoring averaging 78.1 points per game while shooting just over 45 percent from the field, 34 percent on their three-point attempts and 71 percent at the free throw line.
Â
Jones not only leads the team in scoring, but in assists (164) and steals (51) as well.
Tommy Burton is averaging 11.5 points per game and is third in the Sun Belt averaging 7.4 rebounds per game.
Tyrell Gumbs-Frater averages 11.3 points per game and is the league's top three-point shooter knocking down over 41 percent of his attempts.
