CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Friday at the Hackler Golf Course on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. Molly Jones and Garrett Bivens finished as the top Chanticleers in the 5k and 8k events, respectively.
The CCU women's cross country team placed sixth out of 12 teams with a team score of 145. Jones (12th) led the Chants with a top 20 finish and a time of 18:19.3 while teammate Meagan Moreno followed suit with an 18th place finish in 18:47.4.
Ashley Rulison, Amilia Wise-Sweat, Ashley Dalleske, Jessica Martin, and Mia Sheldon posted finishes in the top 70. Rulison crossed the finish line in 39th after navigating the 5k course in 19:58.5 while Wise-Sweat was close behind in 42nd with a time of 20:05.4. Dalleske (21:26.4), Martin (22:12.1), and Sheldon (22:51.5) finished the race in 56th, 65th, and 67th to finish the Chants race.
Wake Forest claimed the women's team win with 25 points while Elon, Charleston Southern, Campbell, and College of Charleston rounded out the top five just in front of CCU.
On the men's side, Bivens was the first Chant to cross the finish line in 27th with a time of 27:19.0 while classmates Michael Welsh Jr., Jack Benoit, and Cory Fleeman were the final Chanticleers to finish the race.
Welsh Jr. (28:46.2), Benoit (28:47.7), and Fleeman (29:31.0) finished 49th, 50th, and 60th, respectively.
Also on the men's side, Campbell's Athanas Kiokoi (23:28.5) broke the Hackler Golf Course record (23:56), formerly held by Zac Edwards of Liberty in 2011.
Coastal Carolina will return to action as the Chants will travel to Greenville, N.C. to compete in the Pirate Invitational hosted by East Carolina University on Friday, Oct. 15.
