Men's Soccer to Face Kentucky in C-USA Championship First Round

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team returns to the pitch for the 2021 Conference USA (C-USA) Men's Soccer Championship in Charlotte, N.C. The Chanticleers are set to face the Kentucky Wildcats Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Coastal will enter the conference championship tournament as the No. 5 seed, while Kentucky is seeded fourth. The entire C-USA Men's Soccer Championship will be available for stream via ESPN+. Only the top six teams advanced to the tournament, while the top two teams in No. 1 FIU and No. 2 Marshall received a first-round bye.

CCU finished the regular season 6-4-4 (.571) overall and with a 3-1-4 (.625) record in its first full season as a member of C-USA, while UK tallied an 11-1-4 (.812) overall record and a 3-1-4 (.625) conference record.

In the two teams' regular-season meeting back on Aug. 26, then-No. 25 nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina and No.14 Kentucky kicked off the 2021 regular-season battling to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in Conway, S.C.

In a match that saw six yellow cards, Kentucky looked to strike early as Cameron Wheeler's shot in the fifth minute was blocked before Martin Soereide played the ball high over the top of the net. At the halftime mark, the Wildcats tallied 10 shots to the Chants' one.

Kentucky opened the first overtime period with a shot on goal but it was quickly saved as freshman goalkeeper Joey Batrouni tallied yet another save on his way to a career-high six saves. Coastal's Marcello Jones looked to notch the golden goal in the 95th minute but his shot was saved. As the seconds ticked down in the final overtime period, Ethan Hackenberg's shot to the right side of the goal was saved.

Across the remainder of the C-USA Tournament, FIU clinched the regular season and the No. 1 seed to earn a bye to the semifinals. Marshall secured the No. 2 seeded and first-round bye, while host Charlotte earned the No. 3 seed.

Also, on Wednesday night, No. 6 seed Florida Atlantic will face No. 3 Charlotte following Coastal Carolina and Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET.
