Chanticleers Women’s Lacrosse to Host Owls in Home Opener

Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse seeks to stay hot in home opener

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team will open its home portion of the 2021 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 27, against Kennesaw State at Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Coastal opened the season with back-to-back wins over former Big South foes' Radford and Winthrop to begin 2-0 on the season, while the Owls (0-0) have yet to play a contest having had two contests postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

ABOUT COASTAL

The Chanticleers' offense is led by Samantha Courtemanche (8 goals, 3 assists) with 11 points while transfer redshirt freshman Kayla Downey (6 goals, 2 assists) follows with eight points, while Lauren Cremen is third on the team in points with six points on six goals. True freshman Monica Manley leads the team with four assists while Avery Drouin and Hannah Close have won eight draw controls apiece.

Defensively, the Chants are led by sophomore goalkeeper Claire Martell who has allowed just 12 goals while facing 36 shots on goal. She has tallied 15 saves for a .556 save percentage and earned her first two collegiate victories in her first two career starts.

Redshirt senior Anya McSorley has won a career-high five draw controls, caused five turnovers, and scooped five ground balls on the season. Fellow defender Emily D'Orsaneo marked a career milestone by grabbing her 112th ground ball, most in program history, and is just five caused turnovers from the program's top spot.

Courtemanche and D'Orsaneo were named Southern Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their performances in their only outings of the year.

ABOUT KENNESAW STATE

Kennesaw State's offense will be led by senior midfielder Siena Gore who was leading the ASUN in goals (28), points (32), and draw controls (46) before the 2020 season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Marissa Gore, who finished second on the team in points (22), returns after tallying 15 goals and seven assists in the shortened 2020 season.

On the defensive third, Payton Gregory, who has started every contest since joining the Owls, has helped the KSU transition achieve a 79.7 clearance percentage to rank third in the ASUN. Kennesaw State will be starting a freshman in goal with either Julia Weiss or Errin Crowe getting the nod.
