CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the spring season in a 2-0 setback to No. 4 Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Complex.
It was a battle of two evenly matched teams, but the Chants (6-2-1) made a few more mistakes in the field and the Hokies (4-2-2) were able to capitalize on those mistakes.
The first mistake came in the 25th minute as CCU goalie
Tor Saunders had some miscommunication on a ball the Chants had control of and when that miscommunication took place the Hokies' Jacob Labovitz swept in and took the ball untouched into the net for the only goal the visitors would need.
The score stood that way until minute 56 when Saunders was called for a penalty in the box which gave the visitors a penalty kick. Sivert Haugli stepped up and scored the PK for the final 2-0 score.
The Chants had several chances to score, outshooting the Hokies 11-5, but could not find the back of the net.
Marcello Jones,
Ethan Hackenberg, and
DZ Harmon led the offensive effort for the Chants with two shots each. The Techsters goalie Mathijs Swaneveld finished the game with three saves which proved vital to the Hokies' victory.
CCU will have little time to rest as another top opponent, VCU, will visit the CCU Soccer Stadium Wednesday, March 3 for a 6 p.m. ET match.
