TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Coastal Carolina freshman
Nicole Abelar posted a 12th-place finish over the weekend to lead the women's golf team at the Florida State Match-up in Tallahassee, Fla.
The first-year Chant carded a final round 82, +10, (41-41) on Sunday but was able to post a top-15 finish with her first two sub-par rounds of 71 and 70. Abelar finished the three-day event with a 54-hole score of 223, +7.
As a team, the Chanticleers placed 11th overall with a final 54-hole team score of 919, +55. CCU posted rounds of 293, 309, and 317 over the 54-holes of play, finishing ahead of Missouri (924, +60), Notre Dame (934, +70), and Jacksonville (989, +125).
Coastal's
Sophia Carlsen recorded her second-straight round of 79, +7, on Sunday to finish with a 54-hole score of 230, +14, (72-79-79) good enough to place in a tie for 34th-place overall.
Both
Heidrun Hlynsdottir and
Tiffany Arafi turned in CCU-low rounds of 78, +6, over the final round of play. Hlynsdottir shot a 39, +3, on both the front and back nine on Sunday to finish with rounds of 76, 80, and 78, for a final 54-hole tournament score of 234, +18, and in a tie for 49th overall. Arafi finished her three days of play with a tournament score of 235, +19, with rounds of 76, 81, and 78. She placed in a tie for 59th overall.
Rounding out the Chants' lineup this weekend was
Caitlin Evans-Brand with a 59th-place finish. Evans-Brand shot rounds of 74, 80, and 83 to finish with a three-round combined score of 237, +21.
No. 11 nationally-ranked Florida State ran away with the team title at their home event, shooting a team score of 855, 9-under par.
No. 14 Kent State finished second at 892, +28, while Michigan (896, +32), Clemson (897, +33), and Ohio State (905, +41) rounded out the top-five on the team leaderboard.
The Chanticleers will return to the links on March 8-9 when they will compete at the River Landing Classic hosted by UNCW at the River Landing Country Club in Wallace, N.C.
