CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell to the nationally-ranked No. 25 Elon Phoenix 16-4 in Conway, S.C. on Saturday afternoon. The Chants fall to 5-1 on the year while the Phoenix improve to 4-0.
Emily D'Orsaneo tied the all-time caused turnover leader,
Maddy Ciardi (2013-16), with her 59th forced turnover of her career. The Centreville, Md. native can reach two more career milestones this season as she is closing in on CCU's career records of games played and games started.
Elon capitalized on winning the opening draw to win eight in the first half of action and put up 11 goals to take a commanding lead that the Chanticleer defense was unable to recover.
Elon's Mae McGlynn scored the first goal of the match with the unassisted tally with 28:50 remaining in the opening half. The Phoenix added eight more before CCU answered with its first goal of the match as
Avery Snyder beat the visitors' goalkeeper, for her third goal of the season, off the assist from
Megan Busch with 9:32 remaining in the opening half of action as Coastal trailed 9-1. The Chanticleers final tally of the first half was Snyder feeding classmate
Monica Manley with just under six minutes left to make it 10-2.
Elon's Margaret Stephan found the back of the net with 1:51 left to play in the first half for the 11-2 advantage at the intermission.
The defenses picked up in the second half as neither team was able to score until 17:55 remained on the game clock. The Phoenix scored first in the second period as Cate Mackel was able to put the visitors up by 10 off the assist from Kaley Ehnow.
Coastal answered as Busch recorded her second assist of the day hitting
Megan Bozzi for her seventh goal of the season making it 12-3 with 16:39 left to play.
Sara Bouwman scored her fifth goal of the day with 14:17 left on the clock to give the Phoenix a running clock for the second time in the half. Mackel and Gillian Curran closed out the scoring for Elon with goals at 9:10 and 3:25 to give the Phoenix 16 for the contest.
Kayla Downey hit the final tally with 14 seconds remaining on the clock as Busch was able to find the transfer freshman from Stony Brook for the final score of the game.
Coastal Carolina will return to action as the Chants hit the road to travel to High Point, N.C. to take on former conference foe High Point on Wednesday, March 17. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
