MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team completed a clean sweep at the CofC Invitational hosted by the College of Charleston this weekend, as the Sandy Chants went 3-0 overall. On Sunday, the Chanticleers posted a 3-2 win over UNCW and then finished the weekend with a 5-0 shutout win over host College of Charleston.
Match 1: Coastal Carolina 3, UNCW 2
Coming off a 5-0 win over the Dolphins of Jacksonville yesterday on day one of the CofC Invitational, the Chanticleers carried the momentum into their first match of the day on Sunday with a 3-2 win over UNCW.
CCU's duo of
Carli Ginther and
Ellie Hanford got the Chants on the board first with a straight-set win at 21-19, 21-7 on court No. 4.
The Seahawks then would steal the third and fifth flights to put the visitors up 2-1 with the top two flights on deck.
The junior duo of
Martine Kragholm and
Lucy Campbell would tie the match at 2-2 with a 21-17, 21-19 win at No. 2 to put the match in the hands of the No. 1 flight.
The final point would come down to the top flight and the reigning ASUN Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week in
Irena Drobnjak and
Sarlota Svobodova who dominated the Seahawks duo of JM Lewandowsku and Ashley Thompson to post a 21-16, 21-12 win to give the Chants the 3-2 match victory.
Match 2: Coastal Carolina 5, College of Charleston 0
Coastal Carolina recorded its fifth sweep of the season with a 5-0 win over College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at the CofC Invitational. The win is the second over the Cougars this season.
CCU improved to 10-4 on the season with the sweep.
The experienced duo of
Kalin Eske and
Kendra Lukacs picked up a win by default at the No. 5 position, as the Cougars were unable to field a team in the flight.
With the 1-0 advantage, the team of Hanford and Ginther cruised to a 21-14, 21-12 victory at the No. 4 flight, while the No. 2 team of Kragholm and Campbell held on for a 24-22, 21-19 straight-set win to seal the win for the Chants.
The Sandy Chants completed the sweep with a 21-17, 21-17 win at the No. 1 flight by Drobnjak and Svobodova while the freshmen pair of
Sarah Riedell and
Emma Gonzalez battled back from a 23-21 first-set loss to defeat Ella Ridinger and Kyra Thompson in three sets at 21-23, 21-19, 17-15 at the No. 3 flight.
The Chants will return home and host Erskine and Carson Newman for two matches each next weekend.
