Chants Pick Up 14-7 Win over Delaware

Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse gets back to winning ways

NEWARK, Del. – Lauren Cremen and Kayla Downey of the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team led the Chants to a 14-7 win over the Delaware Blue Hens in Newark, Del. on Sunday afternoon. The win improved CCU's record to 6-2 overall while Delaware dropped to 1-5 on the year with the loss.

Cremen tallied her second hat trick of the week by finding the back of the net four times on the day while Downey filled the back of the net three times and added four assists to lead the offensive attack. Junior attacker Megan Bozzi notched two goals as Avery Drouin, Samantha Courtemanche, Avery Snyder, Abi George, and Monica Manley each scored once.

As good as the offense was, the defense aided just as much with redshirt freshman goalkeeper Claire Martell recording six saves and allowing just seven goals on 22 shots. The defense caused 10 turnovers as the trio of Sarah Trupp, Emily D'Orsaneo, and Snyder with two apiece. D'Orsaneo is now alone at the top of the program's career caused turnovers list with 60.

Coastal opened the scoring as Downey found Cremen in front of the net for the 1-0 lead with 26:15 remaining in the opening half.

The Blue Hens found the equalizing goal as Danika Swech (two goals) beat the Chants' goalkeeper for the free position goal with 23:28 for the 1-1 tie.

The Chants would pull back out in front at 2-1 as Downey scored her 14th goal of the year at 2-1 off the assist from Courtemanche with 20:52 remaining in the first half. Manley pushed the lead to 3-1 off a free position goal with 14:05 until the intermission.

Jenna McHale scored the second goal of the match for the Blue Hens on a free position shot with 11:54 remaining in the first to cut the Chants lead in half at 3-2.

Courtemanche hit for her lone goal of the contest while Coastal was down a player due to a penalty. The graduate student hit a free position shot to give CCU a two-goal advantage with 7:24 remaining in the half.

As time was close to expiring in the first half, Elizabeth Hsu pulled Delaware to within one at 4-3 with three seconds remaining until the intermission.

Just like in the first half, the Chants opened the scoring as Drouin made it 5-3 off the free position with 27:29 remaining to play in the game. Cremen made it 6-3 off an assist from Courtemanche with 26:19 remaining to play before Bozzi scored the first of her two goals with 21:20 off Downey's second assist of the game to make it 7-3 for CCU.

The Blue Hens Hsu and Kate Bradford would sandwich Cremen's third goal as Delaware trailed 8-5 with 19:50 left in the contest.

Coastal would score the next three goals as Downey (18:58, 17:49) went back-to-back followed by Cremen's fourth goal to make it 11-5 with 15:43 on the clock.

Delaware's Meghan Johnson pulled the Blue Hens to within five at 11-6 off a free position goal with 13:45 remaining in the second half only to see Snyder and Bozzi fill the back of the net to make it 13-6 before Delaware's Swech hit her second goal and final Blue Hen goal of the day with 5:18 left to play.

George closed out the scoring with 3:20 remaining for the final margin of 14-7 off Downey's final assist of the day.
