CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina beach volleyball bounced back from an 0-2 Friday to go 2-0 on Saturday on the final day of the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Chanticleers dropped one match all day in defeating the College of Charleston 4-1 and then sweeping UNCW 5-0.
The Chanticleers (2-2) will return to action on Wednesday, March 10, for a one-day tournament at nationally-ranked Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga.
Match 1: Coastal Carolina 4, College of Charleston 1
Coastal Carolina notched its first win of the 2021 season with a 4-1 win over the College of Charleston in match one of two on Saturday.
The win is CCU's second-straight over the Cougars.
The Sandy Chants opened the match with back-to-back straight-set wins at flights No. 4 and No. 5 to take a 2-0 lead.
CCU duo
Carli Ginther and
Emma Gonzalez beat the team of Marie Martinsen and Mikaela Dougherty 21-18, 21-12 at the No. 4 flight while upperclassmen
Kendra Lukacs and
Kalin Eske followed with a 21-10, 21-11 victory over Lilly Johnson and Cat Schmid on court No. 5 to add to the Chants' lead.
The sophomore team of
Sarlota Svobodova and
Irena Drobnjak sealed the win for the Chants with a 21-14, 21-13 victory at the No. 1 flight over Rebecca Olariu and Sky Benjamin of CCU.
On court No. 3, the freshmen duo of
Sarah Riedell and
Ellie Hanford held on for a 29-27 first-set win and then closed out the match with a 21-16 second-set victory over Ella Ridinger and Kyra Thompson to put the home-standing Chants up 4-0.
However, CofC's team of Maria Zweig and Ella Reames spoiled the Chants' shutout attempt, as they held off the Coastal tandem of
Martine Kragholm and
Lucy Campbell for a 21-16, 19-21, 15-12 win at flight No. 2.
Match 2: Coastal Carolina 5, UNCW 0
Coming off a 4-1 win over the Cougars of the College of Charleston, the Chanticleers carried the momentum into their second match of the day with a 5-0 win over UNCW in the tournament finale.
The tandem of Lukacs and Eske continued their winning ways with a 21-15, 21-12 win at No. 5 to open the match.
After the duo of Ginther and Gonzalez came back from behind to win in three sets 18-21, 21-9, 15-10 on court No. 4, the Chants' team freshmen squad of Riedell and Hanford kept the wins coming for the Chants with a 24-22, 21-18 win at flight No. 3.
The top-flight team of Drobjnak and Svobodova cruised to a 21-19, 21-6 win before the second-year pair of Kragholm and Campbell completed the sweep with a 22-24, 21-6, 15-7 win at position No. 2.
